Michiels, 75 intussen, spendeerde al tijdens zijn jeugd heel wat tijd op de luchthaven en heeft er naar eigen zeggen nog steeds een nauwe band mee. ?Mijn vader was hier boekhouder en ik heb nog leren autorijden op de tarmac, zegt hij. Als journalist maakte ik de tijd mee waarin de regering de luchthaven wilde sluiten, waarna toenmalig burgemeester Lode Craeybeckx de emotionele campagne Antwerpen laat Brussel niet los startte. De komst van Jetairfly nu TUI met de eerste niet-zakelijke vluchten, de ondertunneling van de Krijgsbaan zodat het wegverkeer daar vlotter loopt, de nieuwe vertrekhal, Het aantal bestemmingen en passagiers zal nu hopelijk blijven toenemen, zegt hij. Dat zal echter gebeuren zonder verlenging van de start- en landingsbaan, want dat past niet binnen de milieuvergunning. Het lijkt ook niet meteen de bedoeling van de uitbaters om van Antwerpen een tweede Charleroi te maken.

But the building is a story in itself. The 450 year old building has to say over what happens in 't Clean Floor. This publication tells the rich story of this famous monument. This 450th anniversary will not go unnoticed, if only because the Town Hall is the only building in Antwerp on the UNESCO World Heritage site that still holds its original function. Antwerp city celebrates this anniversary for a whole year, from February 2015 to February 2016 with numerous events In 1565 the people of Antwerp proudly opened their new city hall. The Renaissance palazzo shone the greatness and autonomy of a world out. Shortly after the town hall burned out and lost Antwerp gradually starring role. But the city council went on decorating the town hall, with sculptures of Baurscheit, and paintings by Rubens, Metsijs, Francken, Van Veen or the Succa. Two hundred years later the city was what dozed off and showed the layout of the now very weathered building unusable. Shortage of money and lack of interest kept everything as it was. Yet assiduous city architects were more and more signs plans. The renovations from 1860 were in line with the tradition of greatness and autonomy: when was upstairs really Cleaning Floor. Re-did the city appeal to artists of the time such as Henri Leys and painters who were attached to the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts. This book takes the reader into the long history of the city hall of Antwerp. The book places the city hall in the context of political events and administrative history. The authors devote extensive attention to the architecture, building history and the role of the Market.
