Il movimento che apre la Prima Sinfonia di Gustav Mahler sollecita interrogativi inquietanti, a cominciare dall'indicazione espressiva "Come un suono di natura" posta all'inizio della partitura: con quel gesto, che crea un ponte fra gli aspetti più nascosti del mondo e il suono musicale, capace di svelarli, il compositore fa entrare l'ascoltatore nella dimensione più intima del farsi della natura, mettendolo di fronte alla sua voce più nascosta. La Prima Sinfonia deriva da un Lied composto nel 1884, "Ging heut' morgen übers Feld" ("Questa mattina andavo per i prati"), un canto che affronta il topos dell'irraggiungibile bellezza del mondo, a cui l'uomo vorrebbe partecipare, ma che lo vede sempre bloccato su una soglia che non riesce a superare: il destino umano sembra così giocato dalle luminescenze di una natura che attrae, senza mai farsi penetrare sino in fondo.
