This vital treaty between Great Britain and Portugal was signed during the Napoleonic Wars as Wellesley was conducting the Peninsular War to save the Portuguese from the terrors experienced by the Spanish. The treaty opened all Brazilian ports to English merchants and signalled for the first time that non-Portuguese were allowed to trade directly with the colony. Maria I 1734-1816 not only old had suffered a mental collapse in 1792 and her son João John VI served 24 years as Regent. In 1810 the government was in exile in Brazil and thus the Royal Press issued the first edition in Rio in 1810. This Lisbon edition was issued to make legitimate the treaty with the restoration of the Capital and the accession of John as King. A very good copy bound in recent half leather. OB3/HANos.
