"Le désir des jeunes artistes hongrois au début du XXe siècle était d'aller chaque hiver étudier à Paris - même s'ils devaient y vivre dans la misère -, puis de peindre en été à Nagybanya, et d'exposer à l'automne à Budapest. Les peintres comme Berény, Czobel, Perlrott Csaba ou Bornemisza fréquentent les académies Julian, Colarossi et, entre 1908 et 1910, l'académie Matisse. Ils découvrent les musées, les galeries Durand-Ruel et Vollard, ainsi que Gauguin, Seurat et Van Gogh. Surtout, ils sont mêlés à l'aventure des artistes fauves français, exposent au célèbre Salon d'automne de 1905 dans la salle contiguë à celle des fauves et reviennent dans leur pays avec des peintures qui provoquent une véritable " révolution " parmi les autres peintres hongrois.
