She sends a deposit of 5 pounds for books to chosen by her or her husband Victor but expresses that she "was greatly displeased to receive 'abridged' editions of the two children's books ordered "The Wide Wide World" and "Queechy." When I asked for cheap copies to be sent I naturally expected they would be complete and from Ward Lock or Collins or Blackie - not the totally illiterate Herbert Strang who has been responsible for the present volumes which are almost unrecognisable." She goes on in this vein for two pages later complaining about "publishers who print fairy tales in mutilated form under the name of Hans Anderson and who take it upon themselves to put pink and white rubbish in place of Tenniel's illustrations - or even "Re-tell" Lewis Carrol! sic.<br /> <br /> Victor Purcell 1896-1965 was a British colonial public servant historian poet and Sinologist in Malaya now Malaysia. Susan Warner writing under the name of "Elizabeth Wetherell" wrote 30 novels. The Wide Wide World her first was the most popular. It was translated into several languages including French German & Dutch. Other than Uncle Tom's Cabin it was perhaps the most widely circulated story of American authorship. Wikipedia. She and her sister moved with their father to Constitution Island in the Hudson River after the financial Panic of 1837 teaching religion to West Point cadets. Spine missing otherwise in OK shape; boards lightly toned and worn; toning to pages at hinge. The recipe text is written in African-American dialect. Purcell who was white used the image of the Mammy archetype to create a cooking column called Aunt Priscilla's Recipes which was purported to be written by an African American woman. The daily column was written in an exaggerated dialect. Purcell's work according to Toni Tipton-Martin "was a form of minstrelsy" but "it broke with the long tradition of simply taking and publishing African American recipes without giving black cooks credit." Carr and Purcell "showed that a simple modification of Hahn's spin-echo method reduces drastically the effect of diffusion" in magnetic resonance thus increasing its reliability Aligizaki 213. <br /> <br /> Otto Hahn recognized "the sensitivity of the spin echo MR signal on molecular diffusion. While he proposed that one could measure the diffusion coefficient of a solution containing spin-labeled molecules he did not propose a direct method for doing so. In 1954 in this paper Carr and Purcell proposed a complete mathematical and physical framework for such a measurement using Hahn's NMR spin echo sequence. They realized that the echo magnitude could be sensitized solely to the effects of random molecular spreading caused by diffusion in a way that permits a direct measurement. <br /> <br /> "Carr and Purcell's proposed MR sequences sensitized the MR spin echo to the effects of diffusion" Johansen-Berg Diffusion MRI 6. As a result they were able to develop "a rigorous mathematical framework to measure the diffusion coefficient from such sequences.
