Sie entstand um 1420.Die Künstler: Die größten Buchmaler ihrer Zeit schmückten die Handschrift mit bezaubernden Miniaturen die in 2 Künstlergruppen einzuteilen sind.Eine davon wird dem berühmten Boucicaut-Meister Boucicaut-Meister oder Meister des Maréchal de Boucicaut ist der Notname für eine etwa zwischen 1405 und 1420 in Paris tätige Gruppe von Buchmalern mit innovativen und einflussreichen Arbeiten. Namensgebend ist ein um 1408/10 entstandenes Stundenbuch des Marschall von Frankreich Jean le Meingre de Boucicaut.zugezählt der einer der größten Neuerer unter den Künstlern Nordeuropas vor den Brüdern van Eyck war. Ihm stand der sogenannte Mazarine-Meister Als Mazarin-Meister oder auch Mazarine-Meister oder Meister des Stundenbuchs des Mazarin engl. Master of the Mazarine Hours Master of the Mazarin 469 wird ein vermutlich aus Flandern stammender Buchmaler in Paris um die Jahre 1410 bis 1420 bezeichnet. Der namentlich nicht bekannte Künstler ist nach einem von ihm um 1420 ausgemalten Stundenbuch benannt das sich im 17. Jahrhundert im Besitz des Kardinals Jules Mazarin befand. Das Werk des Mazarin-Meisters gehört zu einer größeren stilistischen Gruppe der Pariser Buchmalerei die mit dem Notnamen Boucicaut-Meister angesprochen wird. zur Seite. Beiden können 37 der Miniaturen zugeordnet werden.Auch die zweite Gruppe besticht durch ihre Qualität und die Sorgfalt der Künstler deren Zusammenarbeit sehr eng gewesen sein muß. Zu nennen wären hier der Egerton-Meister und der Bedford-Meister. Diese beiden führten 44 Miniaturen aus.Die Reise: Marco Polos Vater und Onkel waren bereits 1261 bis 1269 in Asien gewesen. 1271 brachen sie erneut dorthin auf und nahmen den jungen Marco mit. Der Weg führte in mühevollen dreieinhalb Jahren über eine Riesendistanz: von Palästina über Persien und den Persischen Golf Pakistan und Pamir nach Nordchina. Dort erreichten die drei den sagenumwobenen Hof des Mongolenherrschers Kublai Khan. Marco Polo gelang es das Vertrauen des Großkhans zu gewinnen er beherrschte mehrere Sprachen und auch die mongolischen Schriftzeichen. Kublai Khan betraute ihn mehrmals mit vertraulichen Missionen die ihn durch weite Teile Ostasiens aber auch in die Gebiete Südostasiens führten.Erst 1292 begab sich Marco Polo auf die Rückreise die ihn diesmal über den Seeweg den Küsten des Indischen Ozeans entlang über Bagdad nach Venedig führte. Hier ließ er sich nieder und gründete eine Familie.Im Krieg Venedigs gegen Genua befehligte der Weitgereiste eine Galeere wurde aber gefangengenommen und mußte drei Jahre lang in Haft verbringen. Hier teilte er eine Zelle mit einem Literaten namens Rusticello der seine phantastischen Erlebnisse niederschrieb.Dieses Werk das sich nur über Abschriften erhalten hat ist die erste präzise geographische und ethnologische Dokumentation von Ländern und Völkern des Orients. Sie beeinflußte sogar Kolumbus der ein persönliches Exemplar der Handschrift gehabt haben soll.Marco Polo hatte sich während der Reisen Notizen gemacht um Kublai Khan alles genau erzählen zu können. In seinen Berichten erwähnt er aber auch Regionen die er mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit nie selbst bereist hat. Das Einzigartige an dieser Handschrift ist die Tatsache daß es sich um ein Buch handelt in dem Wirklichkeit und Phantasie aufeinandertreffen wo mittelalterliche Vorstellungswelten mit europäischen Traditionen Sagen und Geschichten verwoben sind.Das Buch: Ursprünglicher Besitzer der Handschrift war vermutlich Johann Ohnefurcht Herzog von Burgund. Sicher ist nur daß sie in den Inventaren des Herzogs von Berry auftaucht die das Prachtwerk als Geschenk des Burgunderherzogs verzeichnen. Auch viele persönliche Symbole und Hinweise deuten auf Johann als Auftraggeber hin. Nach dem Tod des Herzogs von Berry ging das Werk an die Familie Armagnac über. Danach verschwindet die Handschrift im Dunkel der Geschichte woraus sie erst in der Bibliothek König Franz' I. Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts wieder auftaucht. Ende des 17. A distinguished and beautifully edition of Marco Polo's Il Milione illustrated with thirty original lithographs by Massimo Campigli sixteen of them full‑page and printed in black red and sepia. The sheets are issued loose as published. The work is preserved in its original folder decorated with a lithograph and housed in the original cardboard slipcase both showing minor corner wear. A paper bookplate appears on the first flyleaf: Ex Libris Lorenzo Spallino.<br />Printed on handmade Fabriano paper and limited to 150 numbered copies the edition is signed and dated '42 in pencil on the colophon by Campigli. This publication represents a remarkable collaboration between three major figures of twentieth‑century Italian art and fine printing. The text and in‑text lithographs were printed in Verona at Giovanni Mardersteig's Officina Bodoni one of the most celebrated private presses of the period. The full‑page and double‑page lithographs were hand‑pulled in Milan by Piero Fornasetti later renowned for his iconic decorative arts. Campigli's illustrations with their stylized archaic figures inspired by Etruscan and Mediterranean art make this volume one of his most significant achievements in book illustration.</p> Ulrico Hoepli hardcover

This is the LEC title that won the very first illustration competition the club ran: Lapshin took a $2500 prize 1934 dollars for the assignment and the judges noted that his work 'felt like it belonged to a book.' Marco Polo and Titus Andronicus 1939-40 were Lapshin's only two LEC commissions — making this title carry a specific collector-significance beyond generic LEC collectibility.nn Edition signature: Inaugural-LEC-contest-winner edition 1934 1500 numbered copies designed by Lester Douglas and printed by Judd & Detweiler in Washington DC. This is copy #563 with Lapshin's red-ink signature on the limitation page visible in photos. Reads as if it's been on a careful shelf its entire life.n Slipcase — honest 90-year wear: The original black cloth slipcase shows what every 1934 LEC slipcase shows after nine decades: corner wear at the openings where the books are inserted and an age-toned title sticker browned to a warm amber tan. Structurally intact full integrity no panels separating. The patina is part of what LEC collectors recognize as an honest unrestored copy — collectors who want a pristine slipcase are buying a different higher market tier; collectors who prefer original-as-issued land here.nnCondition: Books: like-new.
