Minute book of the Burns Club.

Rabbie Burns in Australia A unique manuscript book recording the meetings of the first six years of the Sydney Burns Club together with a scarce facsimile printing of Burns's original manuscript for the poem "Scots Wha' Hae" presented to the Highland Society of New South Wales in the 1890s. Together these items offer a fascinating insight into the preservation and promotion of Scottish culture in late 19th-century Australia. The minute book is written across 50 pages with several additional manuscript pages loosely inserted. Following the club's foundation in 1880 the club hosted Burns Night celebrations arranged concerts of Scottish songs and campaigned for a memorial statue to the poet in Sydney which was unveiled in 1905. The first entry records the club's inaugural meeting on 10 September 1880: "This evening a number of gentlemen. members of the Highland Society of N.S.W. met at the Rooms Waterloo Chambers to take into consideration the desirability of forming a Burns Club. Mr A. Kethel was voted to the Chair and explained fully the good to be derived from the study of the works of Burns and other Scottish authors". The facsimile of "Scots Wha' Hae" is inscribed at the head of the first page "A replica of the Original Copy - printed privately for the Town Council of Edinburgh - Copy belonging to Baillie J. Murray presented by him to this Society" with the society's ink stamp on the final page. We can trace only one other copy of the facsimile held by the State Library of Victoria. Burns wrote the lyric poem in 1793 in response to the trial of Glasgow lawyer Thomas Muir of Huntershill who was convicted of sedition and deported to Botany Bay Sydney. It takes the form of a speech by Robert the Bruce and in the manuscript is titled "Bruce's address to his troops at Bannockburn". The poem has long served as the unofficial national anthem of Scotland. Folio 314 x 212 mm. Contemporary red half calf black pebble-grain cloth sides spine and front cover lettered in gilt paper label to spine lettered "Sept. 1880/85" in manuscript marbled endpapers and edges. Together with a single bifolium facsimile folded to 352 x 257 mm. Book rubbed and lightly worn at extremities one page torn with some loss; facsimile slightly soiled with a few short closed tears and traces of old tape removal; very good condition. hardcover

The First Exhibition of the Art Society of New South Wales held at the Garden Palace. Catalogue

18804504264Sydney: Turner & Henderson 1880. In remarkable original condition. Duodecimo pp. 22 ii; original wrappers preserved in a folding cloth box. The rare catalogue of the Society's inaugural exhibition held at the Garden Palace which had been purpose-built for the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879. An impressive two hundred and twenty oils watercolours and drawings were hung: Mrs. Alfred Williams' painting Ophelia the most expensive at £75 was highly praised by the Bulletin art critic at the time. Her identification as Mrs. Florence E. Williams gives more understanding of the high price as she had exhibited under that version of her name at the Royal Academy since her teens before coming to Australia. Her inclusion was significant for as Joan Kerr has noted "Florence's paintings seem unique for Australia at the time when domestic genre paintings are almost unknown." Florence was a founding member of the Art Society and had been a friend and pupil of and much influenced by Millais. As one of the very few figure paintings in the exhibition Ophelia gained most attention but she also had four other oils in the exhibition. An earlier painting not in this exhibition of a crimson Rosella set against lush vegetation and Mount Wellington was sold for a record $90000 in 2015. As well the catalogue notes W. C. Piguenit's Sydney Harbour from North Shore priced at £52.10.0 in modern times it reached $198000 at Melbourne auction. The catalogue also records works by Collingridge Halstead and Short as well as seven New Zealand watercolours by J C Hoyte the President of the Society. The list of "Working Members" names 80 artists and the Honorary and subscribing Members 47 notably Sir Henry Parkes. From 1871 the New South Wales Academy of Art had held annual exhibitions and had urged the establishment of a Public Art Gallery. This had as much to do with inter colonial rivalry - Melbourne had opened its Gallery in 1861 - as it did about fine art. Once a permanent home for the collection had been found the New South Wales Academy of Art dissolved in 1880 and it was acknowledged that an "artists' society" was needed: a society of professional artists rather than the more inclusive Academy. Artists led by Arthur and George Collingridge sought to establish an Australian school of painting and the first exhibition of The Art Society of New South Wales was held in December 1880 following its formation in July of that year. This catalogue notes that the Society was established for the "promotion and preservation of the Fine Arts in Sydney" and to "enable professional artists to exhibit their works advantageously." Further aims of the Society were lectures on art and a sketching club. The Life Class already established will "give rise to a greater variety in the works." This catalogue is a rare surviving record of the Art Society's first exhibition and succinctly captures the impressive depth of Australian Art in the late nineteenth century. . The Gallant 24th. Dedication of a Brass Tablet at the Priory Church Brecon on Sunday January 23rd 1898.

1898176660Brecon: Printed and Published by David Jenkins "Brecon and Radnor Express" Office 1898. First and only edition of an immediate reprint with additions of a local newspaper account detailing the ceremony and celebrations for the dedication of a memorial to "the non-commissioned officers and men. who fell in action during the Zulu Campaign of 1879". Ten men from the regiment won Victoria Crosses for the campaign and six of them attended the ceremony. No institutional copies have been traced. The 24th Regiment gained legendary status for their actions following one of the greatest military disasters in British history when the unfortified camp at Isandlwana was overwhelmed by a massive Zulu force. Five of the men present in 1898 had won their VCs for their bravery in the desperate defence of Rorke's Drift events depicted in the 1964 film Zulu although not entirely accurately. These men were Frederick Hitch Henry Hook Robert and William Jones and John Williams. Edward Stephenson Browne received his VC for the later Battle of Hlobane. In 1907 after a sustained campaign lieutenants Melvill and Coghill were the first to receive posthumous VCs for their attempts to save the regiment's colours at Isandlwana. Another VC winner from the 24th David Bell also attended. He had earned his medal in 1867 in the Andaman Islands for rescuing several comrades from dangerous surf when their boat capsized during a storm. Octavo pp. 34. Very Good. 464pp. Vigesimoquarto 24mo 12 cm Full brown leather with a gilt tooled spine. Title L.D.S. Hymns gilt stamped on the backstrip. Floral endpapers. All edges gilt. Gilt at head of the spine rubbed. Light rubbing to the extremities. Stitching sporadically visible in the inside margins. Thread tied along inside margin of pp. 272/73. Light scribble on p. 161. Numerals in the pagination very occasionally lacking. Contemporary owner's inscription on front free endpaper: "Jno. T. Thain Jr. / Cardiff / 188 Cathays / Terrace / Jan 1." This likely refers to John Teague Thain Jr. 1866-1905 who was born in Willard Box Elder Utah lived in Swansea Glamorgan Wales in 1901 and died in Logan Utah. The Thain family is featured in the book "From Amroth to Utah" by Roscoe Howells. Flake 1783. From the Preface to the Twenty-Second Edition- "No book published by or for the Latter-day Saints has run through so many editions or been sold so extensively as the Hymn Book of which this is the twenty-second edition. The demand for it continues unabated and since the publication of the Latter-day Saints' Psalmody which contains music for every hymn in this book a new interest has been added to it and its usefulness enhanced. In this edition will be found a metrical index which the book formerly did not contain. This feature will be especially valuable to choirs. A few hymns have also been added to the end of the volume. That these additions may prove acceptable to the public and that the book may continue its cheering and consoling mission indefinitely is the desire of The Publishers. Salt Lake City Utah. June 1897. A broadside issued for the court in Dumfries & Ayr in Scotland for the session held April 19 1819 and Ayr April 22. This broadside is held by the SLNSW. It is not located on OCLC Jisc LibHub or National Library of Scotland. OCLC: 181717771 cites a slightly later "Criminal trial" in Glasgow 27th of April 1819 held by the Univ of Glasgow and the SLNSW. The date is not printed but the date "on Friday the 28th May" is a Friday in 1819. The printing is also consistent with other similar broadsides we have handled. Dumfries: Henry McNish sentence 14 years; transported 29 Mar 1820 on the Mangles to NSW; John Brown and James Brown no transportation record near 1820; Samuel Ferguson and Mary Bunton housebreaking and theft - Sentence 14 years; he is transported July 1821 on the Lord Hungerford arriving in Tasmania in July 1821; no record for Bunton; Margaret Kerr theft imprisonment for 12 months; Peter Finlay & W. Donnel theft housebreaking hanged Ayr: John McNeil Joseph McNeil housebreaking theft - hanged. Three weavers were accused of 5 acts of highway robbery. Theyt were Arthur McCan alias M. Keand John Killan alias Kelly and John Stott. There was an Arthur McCann b. 1781 weaver "Irish rebel" departed 21 Jun 1822 arrived NSW 8 Nov 1822 on the ship Mangles. John Killan alias Kelly was apprehended the other two either escaped or were never caught pled not guilty but confessed to being with the other two and brought authorities to the place where event took place and where a watch was hidden. Witnesses could not identify Killan. Though pronounced guilty because of his youth and honesty he was recommended unanimously to be given mercy. "Lord Pitmilly. pronounced in a manner awfully impressive . the sentence. the prisoner to be executed at Dumfries on Wednesday the 26th of May. The prisoner who during the trial conducted himself with great propriety now fainted and was carried out of Court in that state." However it appears his sentence was commuted to 99 years departed 29 Mar 1820 on the ship Mangles arriving 7 Aug 1820. Reference Convict Records Australia.
