Printed facts on New South Wales for an American market possibly issued for the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia and printed on the verso of each fold of the map are statistics on NSW starting with "advantages of NSW as a home for the emigrant".<br /> <br /> Folding map in original wrappers engraved by G. W. Sharp compiled and drawn by J. Tayler. The map in very good condition with a very small chip at lower left corner. On the inside cover printed information concerning rail ways telegraphs banks live stock coal diamonds lead & silver kerosene shale iron ore tin gold fields copper land crops and wages. Rabbie Burns in Australia A unique manuscript book recording the meetings of the first six years of the Sydney Burns Club together with a scarce facsimile printing of Burns's original manuscript for the poem "Scots Wha' Hae" presented to the Highland Society of New South Wales in the 1890s. Together these items offer a fascinating insight into the preservation and promotion of Scottish culture in late 19th-century Australia. The minute book is written across 50 pages with several additional manuscript pages loosely inserted. Following the club's foundation in 1880 the club hosted Burns Night celebrations arranged concerts of Scottish songs and campaigned for a memorial statue to the poet in Sydney which was unveiled in 1905. The first entry records the club's inaugural meeting on 10 September 1880: "This evening a number of gentlemen. members of the Highland Society of N.S.W. met at the Rooms Waterloo Chambers to take into consideration the desirability of forming a Burns Club. Mr A. Kethel was voted to the Chair and explained fully the good to be derived from the study of the works of Burns and other Scottish authors". The facsimile of "Scots Wha' Hae" is inscribed at the head of the first page "A replica of the Original Copy - printed privately for the Town Council of Edinburgh - Copy belonging to Baillie J. Murray presented by him to this Society" with the society's ink stamp on the final page. We can trace only one other copy of the facsimile held by the State Library of Victoria. Burns wrote the lyric poem in 1793 in response to the trial of Glasgow lawyer Thomas Muir of Huntershill who was convicted of sedition and deported to Botany Bay Sydney. It takes the form of a speech by Robert the Bruce and in the manuscript is titled "Bruce's address to his troops at Bannockburn". The poem has long served as the unofficial national anthem of Scotland. Folio 314 x 212 mm. Contemporary red half calf black pebble-grain cloth sides spine and front cover lettered in gilt paper label to spine lettered "Sept. 1880/85" in manuscript marbled endpapers and edges. Together with a single bifolium facsimile folded to 352 x 257 mm. Book rubbed and lightly worn at extremities one page torn with some loss; facsimile slightly soiled with a few short closed tears and traces of old tape removal; very good condition. hardcover

Although the author states this to be the "only" book on the market written for the toy soldier hobbyist we have not been able to verify this. That said this is obviously an important guide for the toy soldier creator and/or collector. While Wales' spelling and grammar are interesting to say the least his instructions for casting in metel and rubber seem clear and concise. Illustrated throughout with B/W photographs. Original comb-binding complete and intact. Includes sections on "Over Seas Companys" selling toy soldiers and supplies as well as listings for exhibitions and clubs in the United States. Engraved by Emanuel Bowen for John Owens Britannia Depicta a pocket road book derived from Ogilbys innovative atlas of strip maps first published in 1675. 19595Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company Wales. Ruscoe's circular from 'Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Office Newport May 21st 1849.'. The company opened canals from Newport to Pontypool and to Crumlin in 1796. It was taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1875 and a passenger service from Ebbw Vale to Cardiff still runs. Three items with covering paper on which Sir J. E. Harington has written in ink: 'Sir J E Harington Monmouthshire Ry & Canal Papers' with the following added in pencil: 'May 21 1849. Asking my consent to take new shares - No.' All items in good condition lightly aged and worn. ONE: Autograph Letter Signed from Grevile to Harington. Bristol; 13 June 1849. 2pp. 4to. With envelope sealed with red wax bearing two postmarks addressed to 'Sir Jno. E. Harington Bart 3 Wilton Crescent Belgrave Square London'. He explains that Ruscoe has sent the circular Item Two below 'with a Copy of the Resolutions for the Auction of new Shares offering one Share for every three Shares now held together with the form of a consent Item Three below' has been sent to 'Miss Kinsey' but that although she is 'desirous to accept the offer' she does not know Harington's 'Wishes upon the Subject'. In consequence Grevile is sending Harington the papers and explains how he or 'Mr. Balfour' may arrange the matter. TWO: Printed circular by 'Ralph Ruscoe Principal Clerk.' Monmouth Railway and Canal Office Newport May 21st 1849.' 1p. 4to. On recto of the first leaf of a bifolium; wiith the recto of the second leaf carrying in small print a 'Copy of Resolutions of the General Assembly of the Company of Proprietors of the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company Held at the Canal House in Newport on Wednesday May 16th 1849. Richard Blakemore Esq. M.P. Chairman.' Addressed with postmarks on reverse of second leaf to 'Miss Kinsey <> Cottage Clifton' the address corrected in another hand to 'No 1 Richmond Terrace'. The circular is addressed in manuscript to 'C. Grevil sic Esqr. The Revd. Richd. Harington future principal of Brasenose College Oxford & Charles Balfour Esqr.' with 'The Revd W. M. Kinsey' added in pencil. Both documents relate to the issue of new shares as described in Item One above. THREE: Printed 'form of a consent' referred to in Item One above. 1p. 4to. Dated 1849. Col. H. Snodgrass reports in General Orders on the release of 2 prisoners both privates in the 57th Regiment Patrick Thomson and David Wright both of whom were returned to their regiment. This release of prisoners occurred during the tenure of the sadistic commander of the prison Captain Patrick Logan; Moreton Bay's death rate was higher than any other penal settlement in Australia due to disease malnutrition and the infection of wounds from severe flogging.<br /> <br /> Nine column inches on New South Wales 7 column inches on New Zealand.
