British born author Quaritch Wales was an authority on the cultures and languages of Asia having worked in both colonial and native administrations in India Siam Malaya Burma French Indo-China and the Dutch East Indies. Written in the last years of WWII Quaritch Wales provides a sharp and critical view of the failings of the British French and Dutch colonial regimes in Asia and the driving forces and prospects for indigenous Asian leadership in the years to come. 1912167301912. Photograph album of Scotland and Wales circa 1912 documents rural village life agricultural labor and landscape in the Galloway region and coastal Wales through the perspective of a young female amateur photographer. The album records pastoral environments local inhabitants and regional landmarks alongside personal inscriptions and social exchanges capturing both observational and intimate aspects of early twentieth-century life in Britain. The material provides visual evidence of daily labor practices rural settings and informal portraiture within a period of gradual modernization in these regions.<br /> <br /> Photograph album. Scotland and Wales circa 1912. Small format album 6 x 5 inches containing 27 gelatin silver print photographs approximately 3.5 x 2.5 inches each mounted across 58 pages accompanied by four handwritten inscriptions from friends and an ownership inscription reading "To Maggie with Love & Best wishes for a Merry Xmas." The photographs depict identifiable locations in Galloway including Threave Castle Loch Ken Loch Dee Bridge of Dee Dundrennan Abbey and Carlingwark Loch as well as a coastal view identified as Llandudno. Scenes include agricultural labor such as "Sheep Washing" showing workers managing livestock at a riverside and "Salmon Netting" depicting eight laborers resting while working a fast-moving river. Additional images capture moor landscapes harbors and shipyard activity. Human subjects include an older man identified as "The Laird o' Meikleyetto" seated outdoors with a pipe and dog along with group portraits such as "Studies in Expressions" showing eight children and a dog posed together with varied expressions. Many photographs are captioned in ink with titles such as "A Galloway Moor" "Raider's Brig." and "Raider's Land." The album also includes portraits of family members and reflects experimentation in photographic printing with variation in tonal quality and technique across images.<br /> <br /> The album documents a period in which rural regions of Scotland retained agricultural and village-based labor structures while increasingly being recorded through amateur photography. The inclusion of inscriptions featuring poetic reflections on friendship and life-such as "All life is a school a preparation a purpose."-indicates the album's dual function as both visual record and social keepsake. The combination of landscape labor and portraiture situates the compiler within a network of observation and personal memory-making during the early twentieth century. Textured paper boards with green faux leather covering and inset portrait on front; wear to extremities; final ten leaves detached; photographs generally well-preserved with strong clarity; overall good to very good condition. A cohesive album documenting rural British life and early amateur photographic practice. unknown
