A very rare complete set of this interesting and important Tennessee periodical containing all twelve articles entitled "Early History of the Southwest" which constitute the main interest of the magazine for modern readers. After the magazine ceased publication with the December 1852 issue the editors followed their intention stated in their last editorial and gathered all of the narratives into a book issued in January 1853 entitled INDIAN BATTLES MURDERS SEIGES sic AND FORAYS IN THE SOUTH- WEST. ".This was a collection of narratives by various authors. These had appeared separately as articles in the SOUTH WESTERN MONTHLY MAGAZINE printed in Nashville during the years 1851-52. The magazines are considered frontier periodicals of extreme rarity - the 1853 book.is all but unobtainable. Apparently few copies of the book were printed judging from the very few times one finds records of its sale." - Allen. Folio. 10 2 pp.<br>Â Â Â Â First editions of two significant documents one from Parliament and one from Charles II regarding the furor over the Exclusion Bill. In the first work the tone is indeed almost aggressively humble as per the title but the position is utterly unyielding: The Catholic Duke of York will not be accepted in the line of succession as Charles II's life will allegedly be in constant deadly danger as long as there is any possibility of "a Popish Successor" p. 135. In response to the "Humble Address" Charles dismissed the Parliament and called another which also refused to do his bidding after which he issued the second piece here an attempt at justification which invokes the Fitzharris treason case.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: These two copies were joined together by a contemporary reader who marked the recto of the printing permission of the first piece with "The Address" and the verso of the permission of the second piece that is that piece's final page with "The King's Declaration. This read in ye Parochial Church of Thrandeston May ye first Anno Domini 1681. Tho. Mael." A good copy housed in a half-morocco slipcase spine gilt erroneously noting "inscription by Francis Bacon". A royal decree issued by King James I confirming that baronets holders of hereditary titles awarded by the crown were to be ranked below the younger sons of Viscounts and Barons. The practice of awarding baronetcies was introduced by James I in 1611 and this decree was issued in response to a "controversie which did arise upon an inference only out of some dark words contained in the Letters Patents of the said Baronets." This copy has numerous contemporary ink inscriptions in English on three pages some of which were smeared and are now mostly illegible at an early date. Attebery calls this episodic children's fantasy "a rather disappointing sequel to Irving's treatment of the same Catskill scenery" but this fairy story has little to do with the scenery of the region and nothing to do with Rip's adventure. It's an imaginative though somewhat didactic dream fantasy of Catskill fairies of Dutch and American Indian ancestry and Nip an elf of Germanic ancestry from the Berkshires who visit Joe a poor farmer's boy to play and work making gifts on Christmas Eve. During this enchanted evening all animals and inanimate objects including a grandfather clock and a seashell can talk to human beings. All relate episodes from their lives to young Joe most of the experiences illustrating moral values. The evening's revelry owes more to Hoffmann's Nutcracker or A Midsummer Night's Dream than Rip's adventure among the gnomes. The excellent illustrations by Fredericks are reminiscent and perhaps influenced by the work of Richard Doyle. Some or all of this material appeared serially in HARPER'S NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE in 1875. The book is copyright 1875 but it was published in 1876. A physically beautiful book that was displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 because of its typography and displayed again as part of a contemporary exhibition at Columbia University Judging a Book by its Cover.
