1992153831Paris: Les Éditions du Solstice 1992. Ten etchings signed by Lichtenstein First edition first printing number 24 of 80 copies signed by Lichtenstein and Ginsberg on the limitation page from a total edition of 125; each print is initialled lower right by Lichtenstein numbered lower left. In 1991 Lichtenstein was approached to provide illustrations for a French edition of Allen Ginsberg's The New Fall of America. Ginsberg selected 11 poems to be translated into French and Lichtenstein created 10 collages inspired by them from which etchings were printed for the book. The imagery is characteristic of Lichtenstein's work in popular illustrations. "The image of Ginsberg as a Buddha in a lotus pose for instance was inspired by a vignette symbolizing meditation on a yoga class sheet. Cubistic visions of the city and emblems of explosions alternate with more peaceful landscapes to provide a visual counterpart to Ginsberg's vivid evocation of contemporary America" Morgan Library and Museum. Folio. 10 coloured etching and aquatints on 250 gsm Velin d'Arches paper. Sheet sizes: Approx 48 x 35.4 cm. Image sizes: Approx 37.5 x 27.8 cm. Original red cloth spine lettered in white Velin d'Arches paper pages unbound. With the publisher's blue cloth slipcase. Fine in fine slipcase. Corlett 267-276. hardcover
1964362757Milan: Galleria Schwartz 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. A twenty-image gallery of original engravings printed from plates made in 1962 the defining year of American Pop Art by the defining artists of the era including Andy Warhol his first multiple Roy Lichtenstein Wayne Thiebaud Jim Dine and others.<br /> <br /> These etchings are presented in book format with each artwork bound into the book in a mat with a clear plastic protector. Usually these images are four removed from the book. However in your cataloguer's most humble opinion this book presentation is far superior to looking at individual images hanging on a wall. The intimate presentation of the book and the alphabetical sequencing which requires patience to find the famous works leads to unexpected discoveries. And the excitement of having a Warhol you can set on your lap is a real joy.<br /> <br /> For this issue of the International Anthology of Contemporary Engraving the editors commissioned the hottest young artists on the American scene to make engravings for this book mostly in 1962 for publication two years later. The highlight is Roy Lichtenstein's etching of a light switch. Wayne Thiebaud adapted a painting of yo-yos shifting the placement of the toys for this black-and-white medium. Andy Warhol appropriated an ad for a discount cooking pot that he found on page 35 of the October 16 1962 New York Daily News and made it visually interesting through clever cropping the ad may have appeared on other days as well but I found it first on October 16 and I stopped looking. <br /> <br /> These engravings were issued in an edition of 100 copies: 60 numbered with Arabic numerals 25 numbered with Roman numerals for the contributors and 15 artist's proofs marked "e.a." for "épreuve d'artiste." The mats measure 9 by 11-3/4 inches plus the binding stub.<br /> <br /> This bound volume includes 8 leaves two blank for text with all contents presented in English as well as French and Italian translation. The introduction is by Billy Klüver who worked with Andy Warhol. <br /> <br /> The original etchings presented in this volume are all signed by the artist with the exception of the Warhol which is blindstamped. They are as follows with captions for untitled works invented by your cataloguer and the mediums and plate sizes w x h taken from the cataloging of the Museum of Modern Art website:<br /> <br /> 1. George Brecht. Untitled "1 cut out this block". Etching; plate 4-3/4 by 5-1/2 inches; <br /> 2. Allan D'Arcangelo. "American Madonna." Etching; plate 4-3/8 by 5-7/8; <br /> 3. Jim Dine. Christoph Grunenberg July 2000 Tate<br /><br />Between 1971 and 1976 Lichtenstein produced two series of entablature paintings based on photographs he had taken in New York of 20th century architectural ornaments in Lower Manhattan and specifically in the vicinity of Wall Street and 28th Street. During this period in May 1974 he began to also discuss the creation of the 'Entablature' print series with Master Printmaker Ken Tyler of Tyler Graphics Ltd. who Lichtenstein collaborated with closely to make many of his original prints over the years. <br /><br />Together Lichtenstein and Tyler produced eleven 'Entablature' prints each one taking an epic two months to complete before they would move on to the next composition. This series Tyler explains would push him and Lichtenstein far beyond the known limits of printmaking. At the beginning of each print's creation a great deal of trial and error would ensue before they could perfect the complex foil layering and embossing/debossing of patterns. <br /><br />On the occasion of their exhibition 'Roy Lichtenstein: Pop Remix' 2014 the National Gallery of Australia described this series of prints as 'the pinnacle of technical complexity in Lichtenstein's collaboration with Tyler and the staff at Tyler Graphics'. Knowing this it is easy to understand why 'Entablature III' is seen as a ground-breaking artwork and with only 16 prints issued in the standard edition it makes this example all the rarer.<br /> Corlett 139; T.335. 1976 unknown

This piece was hand drawn onto a copperplate by the artist using etching aquatint soft-ground and engraving. Within the 'American Indian Theme' series Lichtenstein combined one of his previously explored subjects the American Indian together with surrealist overtones as seen in the present work. A broad variety of influencing source materials can be identified in this series such as totems textiles beadwork quiltwork ceramics and baskets.<br /> Corlett 170; Tyler 1987 cat no. 354:RL22 1980 unknown

Located in Kensington which today has long been engulfed by greater London the mansion began life as Cope Castle built beginning in 1607 by Sir Walter Cope. From Sir Walter the manor passed to his daughter Isabel wife of Henry Rich who became the first Earl of Holland in 1624. Like the king to whom he was loyal Rich was beheaded in 1649. Later in the century Holland House was rented by William Penn and in 1767 it was bought by Henry Fox first Lord Holland 1705-74 who held the position of leader of the House of Commons. In its day Holland House hosted the leading lights of Europe including Byron and the future American president James Monroe. Our author Princess Marie Henriette Norberte of Liechtenstein 1843-1931 was motivated to write these memoirs by her friendship with the widow of the fourth Lord Holland. The very attractive binding is the work of French-born binder Lucien Broca 1829-1910 who immigrated to London in 1875. According to Tidcombe's "Women Bookbinders" Broca was a "superb trade finisher" who originally worked for Antoine Chatelin then went into partnership with German émigré Simon Kauffmann from 1876 to 1889. Tidcombe and Sarah Prideaux's former pupil Katherine Adams believe that most of the bindings attributed to Prideaux between 1890 and 1900--some 290 volumes--were actually done by Broca with Tidcombe giving the Frenchman credit for the "best Prideaux bindings." Prideaux never publicly acknowledged his work perhaps for fear of disappointing fans of the most famous woman bookbinder in England. Broca was in business for himself as an "Art Binder" in 1901 and our binding was probably done about that time. The beauty of the present design is dependent on his perfection of finish--crispness of line and solidity of impression were Broca's hallmarks. Macmillan and Co unknown
