He left his abandoned room above a synogoue in the Jewish quarter of East London in the 1960s only to be discovered twenty years later the mysterious tenants personality immaculately preserved through the obscure objects he had left behind and supposedly even the imprint of a head fossilised to a pillow. Moved by the mystery of his story and eccentricity artist Rachel Lichtenstein came across the abandoned room in 1990. Her inspired text details her personal odyssey for Rodinsky which took her to Poland and Israel as well as on an exploration of Jewish London and is accompanied by IaIn Sinclair's own commentary on the journey Lichtenstein undertook into uncovering her history. hardcover

448466Artangel. Paperback. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. In 1969 Jewish recluse David Rodinsky mysteriously disappeared from his attic room above the synagogue in Princelet Street in the heart of the old Jewish East End. A decade later his room was reopened and its mess of papers notebooks writings in several languages and cabalistic diagrams began to capture peoples imagination. Eventually Rodinsky and his rooms assumed mythical proportions.Rachel Lichtenstein was intrigued by the story and researched it in detail ending up writing an artists guidebook titled Rodinskys Whitechapel which takes the reader on a walking tour past sites and buildings that played an important role not only in Rodinskys life but also in Lichtensteins own. The walk highlights the last remnants of many important locations of the once vibrant but now quickly vanishing Jewish East End. Mr. Katzs closed not long after publication in 1999 as have many other places on the route since. Like Cardiffs book and audio work Lichtensteins guide highlights how a city like London has been a home to migrant and different communities living side by side for centuries. Doing the walk now also makes us aware of how quickly so much of the citys tissue can change and what stays the same revived refurbished regenerated. A beautifully produced small book with fold out map and colour photos Artangel paperback
