Henry Keppel was a British naval officer who served in the Opium War and was sent to the Malacca Straits in the 1843-44 campaign to suppress Borneo pirates. Keppel Harbour a stretch of water at the southern tip of Singapore was named after him after he cleared the straits of pirates. The two volumes recount James Brooke's exploits in Sarawak the military explots of Brooke Keppel and Sir Edward Belcher and a geographical overview of Borneo as well as commentary on the natural history of the region.
