Koloß; ehemals Direktor des Völkerkundemuseums Berlin. - Mit dem vorliegenden Band beginnt eine Reihe von Publikationen innerhalb der "Veröffentlichungen des Museums für Völkerkunde Berlin", in der das materielle Gut altperuanischer Kulturen, welches sich im Besitz des Berliner Museums für Völkerkunde befindet, in Wort und Bild vorgestellt wird. Das Hauptanliegen dieser Veröffentlichungen ist die komplette katalogartige Darstellung einzelner Stilgruppen oder Sammlungsteile, die sich aus dem Material ergeben, um sie Interessierten als Arbeitsgrundlage zugänglich zu machen. Der erste Katalog dieser Reihe behandelt das Material der frühen Kulturen Alt-Perus, Chavin, Paracas bis zur Phase Proto-Nazca, Viru, die Phase Proto-Moche und Vicus, letztere mit ihren zeitlich später liegenden Negativ-Phasen. Er umfaßt Keramiken, Stein- und Metallobjekte, eine Kalebasse sowie Textilien. Die Zusammenfassung dieser Kultur- und Materialgruppen in einem Bande, die ihn etwas heterogen erscheinen lassen mag, ist bedingt durch deren jeweilige geringe Objektzahl, die eine Veröffentlichung in Einzelbänden ausschloß. Solche kleinen Gruppen lassen auch kaum kulturhistorische Schlüsse zu, die aber dann zu ziehen sein werden, wenn dieses Material in größere Reihen eingebettet sein wird. Hinzu kommt auch die Tatsache, daß die Dokumentation der meisten Objekte äußerst unbefriedigend ist, da kein Stück aus einer wissenschaftlich beobachteten Grabung stammt, die Fundumstände also nicht bekannt sind. Weiterhin sind die Fundortangaben für die Objekte, die vor und um 1900 erworben wurden, nur mit Vorsicht zu gebrauchen. … (Vorwort Bd. I) / INHALT Bd.
