The author travelled extensively in Peru to research her novel and provided a detailed picture of Peru at the time with references to its history.

El autor se enfrenta a las autoridades peruanas al denunciar la persecución política contra el líder del Partido Aprista Peruano Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre y sus seguidores, entre los que se contaban buen número de inmigrantes españoles. Uno de los casos más sonados fue la participación de Juan Solano en el levantamiento aprista de Huaraz, en relación con la gran insurrección de Trujillo de Julio de 1932, razones al parecer por las que fue fusilado. El autor, español, denuncia aquí la existencia de una trama gestada por el hacendado para el que trabajaba quien no dudó en acusarle de sedicioso. Malas relaciones de la República española con el Gobierno del Mariscal Óscar R. Benavides, y mal ambiente, agravado por las continuas reclamaciones diplomáticas, que acabaría en 1938 con la ruptura de las mismas.
