Co-edited by the Instituto Judaico Marc Chagall, with a foreword of the president of the Institute Evelyn Berg. The book recalls the difficult arrival and settlement of Eastern European Jews, by the beginning and middle of the twentieth century, in the most southern state of Brazil. The author, Moacyr Jaime Scliar (1937-2011), spent most of his life in Porto Alegre. He worked as a physician and university professor while also constantly researching and churning literature: short stories, novels, essays, children's literature and some columns in several Brazilian newspapers. ********************************************** Porto Alegre, Gráfica Editora Pallotti, sem data [circa 1990]. O livro conta a difícil chegada e fixação de judeus do Leste Europeu, no início e meados do século XX, no estado mais ao sul do Brasil. O autor, Moacyr Jaime Scliar (1937-2011), passou a maior parte de sua vida em Porto Alegre. Trabalhou como médico e professor universitário, além de pesquisar e produzir constantemente literatura: contos, romances, ensaios, literatura infantil e algumas colunas em diversos jornais brasileiros.

Catalogue d'une exposition tenue à la galerie Alfred Kren de New York et consacrée aux ex-votos du nordeste brésilien, c'est-à-dire à des oeuvres fabriquées pour être données à un saint, à la Vierge, etc. en remerciement d'une prière ou d'un vœu réalisé. En noir et blanc, contient des photos de 54 ex votos ainsi que d'autres photographies. Textes de Fatima Bercht, photos de Glenn Steigelman et Giovanna et Francesco Del Brenna. Enrichi d'une ligne en portugais signée du galeriste Alfred Kren, qui consulte un libraire brésilien sur la viabilité d'une vente de plusieurs exemplaire de cette brochure au Brésil. Si Kren manifeste des doutes, en craignant que le prix au détail aux États-Unis devienne "une quantité exorbitante de cruzeiros brésiliens" après exportation, il apprécie suffisamment l'idée pour envoyer le présent exemplaire en cadeau au destinataire de la lettre. ****************** New York, Alfred Kren Gallery, 1985. In black and white, contains photos of 54 ex-votos as well as other photographs. Texts by Fatima Bercht, photos by Glenn Steigelman and Giovanna and Francesco Del Brenna. Enriched with a letter in Portuguese signed by the gallery owner Alfred Kren, who asks a Brazilian bookseller about the viability of a sale of several copies of this brochure in Brazil. While Kren expresses doubts, fearing that the retail price in the United States will turn into "an exorbitant amount of Brazilian cruzeiros" once the booklets get exported, he likes the idea enough to send this copy as a gift to the recipient of the letter.
