Smith first came to Brazil as part of the Morgan expedition in 1870 and returned in 1874. He had a keen insight into the local political and economic conditions. This classic travel description is much sought after. A London edition was published later the same year. It gives a very detailed account, including much on the rivers, natural history, agriculture and the Indians. The appendix is on the geology and physical geography of the Amazons Valley.
