He studied at Ratcliffe College Charnwood Leicestershire where he was ordained. 2pp 12mo. Twenty-eight lines of text. In fair condition on thin aged and worn paper. Addressed to ‘Revd. H. W. Lewthwaite / London’ and signed ‘Yours in Xt. / very affect.ly / Francis Cardozo Ayres / Bishop of Pernambuco’. Begins: ‘Very Dear Fr. Lewthwaite / Having an interval to write to you I do it very willingly having found among my papers a small note which I remember well belongs to you; & perhaps is very necessary to you.’ He did not read the note and will send it ‘as soon as I conveniently can’. The boat is ‘enjoying a very fine passage’ and ‘so far The Officers are very kind to us & oblige us permitting us to have Mass said in the Saloon’. He discussing this for a while before referring to the ‘weak state of health of the other Priests’. ‘As to my voyage I resolved to go first to Rio Janeiro hence I will go to Pernambuca which caused me to postpone my departure for Lisbon & to take this English Steamer’. In Lisbon he encountered ‘Dr Baines the Superior of the English College & in his Confreres very amiable friends It was he who presented me with the Altar Stone Wine & Altar Breads all this very abundantly’. A small archive from Charles Skipper & East Limited the London bank note printers including 2 hand written letters on company headed paper which divulge negotiations regarding the potential supply of new bank notes to the Banco da Republica dos Estados Unidos du Brazil and Banco Nacional de la Republica de Colombia. The letters are dated March and April 1891 and penned by an agent working on behalf of Charles Skipper & East sent from an address on Rue de Soutay Paris. Details of potential orders discussed include denominations required quantities note sizes print type costings colour watermarks vignettes precise shipping costs and security arrangements 'they want the new notes to be of a different appearance from those now in use and to combine all possible conditions of security'. Letter 1: Dated 23rd March 1891 discusses the agent's commission the receipt of sketches for the 'un mil' note for Banco da Republica dos Estados Unidos du Brazil and the receipt of 9 bank notes used in Colombia by Banco Nacional de la Republica de Colombia sent from M Luis Carlos Rico of Bogota. 4 sides in contemporary hand writing. Very detailed. Signed 'Yours faithfully E Gany'. In very good condition. Letter 2: Dated 24th April 1891 discusses sketches of the 100 peso note for Colombia quotations for the 5760000 notes in six kinds to be printed and their American competitors. 2 sides in contemporary hand writing. Very detailed. Signed 'Yours faithfully E Gany'. In very good condition. Additionally included in the archive are: Debentures numbered 390 - 400 dated 1st December 1931 signed by the Directors and secretary of Charles Skipper & East Ltd. Double sided printed on pink paper stamped and dated. In fresh condition. A letter dated April 1932 from the solicitors representing Charles Skipper & East to Miss ABS Macfie giving notice to her tenancy of 50 Great Tower St EC3. A legal letter headed Lincoln's Inn 26th May 1892 regarding deeds for a property on Tower Hill in Great Tower St and access to Priest's Alley naming Mr Edward Wormald. Very Scarce. <br /><br />A travel guide / mug book bi-lingual and ending with 32 pages of local advertisements. Gift inscription to Commander Chapman C. Todd U.S.N. who commanded the U.S.S. Wilmington during the Spanish-American War as part of the North Atlantic Fleet and later the South Atlantic Sqadron. In early 1899 the Wilmington made a 4600 round-tip voyage on the Amazon River. The inscription suggests that it was by Bertino de Miranda Lima a Brazilian journalist and contributor here at Manaos.
