A uncommon first edition novel set in a girls' boarding school during the First World War a gripping tale of espionage and patriotism during the War. The first edition of this uncommon novel. Undated dated from the list of titles to the verso of the half-title the most recent title listed being 'The Madcap of the School' which was published in 1917.'A Patriotic Schoolgirl' is a heartwarming tale following Marjorie as she starts a new boarding school. Set during the war there is a spy plot at the school which Marjorie undertakes to unravel. An interesting tale providing a unique look at contemporary accounts for the First World War.Illustrated with a frontispiece and five plates.Collated complete.Written by Angela Brazil. Brazil was a popular writer of 'schoolgirl' novels intended for young girls. They were mostly set in boarding schools and lacked the moral instruction that most works for young women at that time had.Illustrated by Balliol Salmon who illustrated for 'The Graphic' as well as teaching art. He illustrated three more of Brazil's books 'The Jolliest Term on Record' 'A Popular Schoolgirl' and 'The Madcap Of The School'. In the original publisher's decorative cloth binding. Externally smart with some light rubbing to the boards and spine affecting the decorative spine and front board. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is discoloured. Small crack to the rear joint. Neat repair to the head and tail of the rear joint. Light marks to the boards and spine. A small amount of cockling of the cloth to the rear joint. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound. A two-volume history of the Japanese in Brazil by a one-time California resident who helped open Brazil for the Japanese. The first Japanese immigrants settled in Brazil in 1908 not coincidentally the year after the Gentleman's Agreement restricted immigration to the United States. The new arrivals mostly pursued coffee cultivation around Sao Paulo. The first volume covers the diplomatic agreements and legal framework for Japanese immigrants in Brazil. The second volume describes the various colonies established successful businesses and offers biographies of some pioneers. These volumes were published to coincide with the 2600th anniversary of Japan a milestone used to stoke the flames of nationalism in the early 1940s. These books were reprinted in the 1950s when Japanese immigration to Brazil boomed again and then again in the 1990s. Aoyagi was a major proponent of Japanese emigration and for the establishment of colonies in the Americas. He arrived in California in the 1890s was the first Japanese to visit Peru and then led the push for agricultural colonies in Brazil negotiating the agreements to allow settlements and agricultural exports. Aoyagi was also instrumental in negotiating for Japanese government funds to buy land in Brazil for immigrant farmers.
