Curiosamente, el 15 de enero de 2011, la estatua de Villegas, que presidía una plaza central de la ciudad, fue decapitada y retirada de su lugar tras un juicio popular, siendo acusado el conquistador de asesino de los aborígenes gayones, jira jaras y otros pueblos que habitaron el actual estado Lara e insaciable explotador de las minas de oro de Buría y Borburata.
