The case revolves around the legal status of an illegitimate daughter who was born in 1855 before the current Civil Code was inacted. 1826WRCAM51528Santiago: Imprenta de la Biblioteca 1826. Five broadsheets approximately 12 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches each. A few chips and minor paper loss at the corners. Moderately tanned light dampstaining. About very good. Untrimmed. Five early issues of important decrees and documents promulgated by members of the Chilean government published from April 18 to June 7 1826. Chile declared its independence from Spain in 1810 but did not expel all colonial forces from its mainland until 1821 and the last Spanish elements from its island territories until 1826. A Chilean constitution was not established until 1833. These registers therefore provide intriguing documentation of a nascent independent Chilean government after a long period of rebellion and civil war. The documents here consist principally of directives from several government departments including those for war finance foreign relations and the interior. Vial acting secretary. José Miguel de la Barra Lopez 1799-1851 Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Chile and author of Compendio de la historia del coloniaje e independiencia de América was a deputy in the Parliament. Antonio Jacobo Vial Formas was a deputy and government official in both domestic and foreign affairs. One copy at the BN Chile otherwise none located at any other major libraries. Approximately 85 images contained in a photo album loosely mounted in at their corners not glued with approx. 25 images not mounted and laid-in; various formats and sizes all black and white; the largest about 7" x 9" size the smallest snapshot 2 1/4" x 3 1/2" with most of the images somewhere between and in generally good condition occasional wear or crinkling if they'd been dismounted; contained in period beige stiff-paper album oblong format string bound approx. 9" x 13" with wear and rubbing; with the Chilean merchant marine captain's & pilot's certification completed in manuscript "Marina Mercante Nacional Chile . Capitan de Cabotaje de la Marina Mercante Nacionale Piloto Primero ." signed by the Director del Litoral and with the original registration stamp nicely colored arms of Chile at top approx. 9 1/2" x 14 3/4" size some browning old creasing still very good and a fairly handsome document; Captain Jorge Rosa Reed c. 1916-2011 formerly an officer in the Chilean Navy for many years a director of operations for the Compania Sud-Americana de Vapores in their New York offices. CSAV one of the oldest continuously operating shipping companies in the world started in 1872; a good group of photographic material illustrating the career of a South American naval officer who went on to living in the U.S. and was involved in international shipping. hardcover books

A curious and unrecorded imprint celebrating the anniversary of Chile's independence with a patriotic song in Italian. The song dedicated by a group of Italian professors to Chile's Supreme Director Bernardo O'Higgins is printed in parallel columns in Italian and Spanish. During the first years of independence it was common in Chile to contract foreign professors for the teaching of various discipline - in this case probably literature. unknown books

A rare printed decree by Philip V King of Spain regarding the reconstruction of the Casa de Moneda in Santiago following the earthquake that devastated that city in 1730. Detailed orders concerning the construction and operation of the Casa de Moneda and related matters regarding the processing of gold are also provided. It is noted that the reconstruction of the Santiago mint will ensure that the gold will not need to be sent to Lima for processing as was the case after the earthquake. Dated October 1 1743 the decree was printed in Madrid for distribution to officials in the Council of the Indies and in Santiago. A printed note dated Madrid March 22 1744 at the bottom of the text indicates that the text is a copy of the original which remains with the Secretary of Peru. Not in EUROPEAN AMERICANA.
