Si l'Introduction se contente de comparer la colonisation anglo-saxonne à la colonisation espagnole, qui s'est démarquée par son "absolutisme" et sa volonté d'isoler ses colonies du reste du monde "au profit exclusif de la métropole", en ignorant le Portugal et sa très vaste colonie, le livre consacre ensuite pas moins de trois chapitres au Brésil avant de repasser à l'isthme central, à la "Nouvelle-Grenade" et même à Cuba.
