20261125559870
Fredericton New Brunswick: Goose Lane Editions 2026. Book. New. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. pictorial paper 351 pages : illustrations maps portraits some colour :"The book is a documentary history of Bilijk Kingsclear First Nation from the late 18th century to the 1950s. The text is split into three sections 1783-1850 1851-1900 1901-1950. Each section features a brief overview of the historical trends of the period followed by documents such as census and church records government reports newspaper accounts and letters paintings maps and photographs along with glosses from the editor. There is also a brief introduction outlining the research involved in pulling together the book. The book covers the period from the Loyalist arrival in New Brunswick when Ekwpahak -- the traditional gathering place of the Wlastkokewiyik -- was purchased by a Loyalist judge in a highly questionable transaction and the reserve at Kingsclear was established a little upriver of Ekwpahak. The history ends in 1950 in the aftermath of a failed attempt to centralize Wlastkokwey Nation at Kingsclear. The documents clearly demonstrate the destructive impact of colonialism upon the Wlastkokewiyik from their dispossession by Loyalists and the establishment of the Sussex Vale Indian School in the late 18th century to the increasing restrictions on traditional life that both impoverished and oppressed them. They also trace family histories and illustrate what daily life in Bilijk was like."-- Provided by publisher.
Goose Lane Editions paperback
