"Observing the grim results of industrial capitalism in Canada and Britain Woodsworth concluded that his church's stress upon personal salvation was wrong. Moving from middle-class pulpits to a city mission All People's Winnipeg he worked with immigrant slum dwellers 1904-13. By 1914 he had become a controversial supporter of trade-union collective bargaining and an ardent democratic socialist - on Fabian and British Labour Party lines. He was also adamantly pacifist seeing war as a product of capitalist and imperial competition and he was fired from a governmental social-research position in 1917 for openly opposing conscription." - Canadian Encyclopedia. Despite his then-progressive stance through a 21st century lens the ideas and terminology herein are difficult to read; as such this is an important neglected piece of Canadian history. 19416339Transcona Mb: Wm. H. Gander 1941. Very good. Three issues. 16mo. Lightly toned minor wear. The first three issues of this amateur periodical. This charming work has a very meta vibe with at least these first three issues being a newspaper about other newspapers and journals. The first issue focuses on The Boys' Friend while the other two concern "The Magnet Library" "The Empire Library" the "Thri'penny Libraries" and some former boys' writers. The topic must have been of significant interest to William Gander as the periodical which was "printed and issued occasionally" ran until 1965. Wm. H. Gander unknown
