1866406946 full page engravings inc. frontis Interesting book plate which reads Presents this to John O'Donogh a pupil in the Public Schools of The City of Toronto 1866 by the Liberality of a Vice-President Jesse Ketchum Esq. Jesse Ketchum businessman politician b at Spencertown NY 31 Mar 1782; d at Buffalo NY 7 Sept 1867. Ketchum moved to Upper Canada as a youth and became a leading merchant and landowner in York Toronto. A noted philanthropist he is most often remembered for his dedicated work to establish common schools though he himself had little formal education. However he generously donated time and money to set up benevolent and relief societies to construct churches Sunday schools and Bible societies and the York Mechanics' Institute. He was vice-president of the York Temperance Society founded in 1830 and built two halls for the societys meetings. He was a founder of the Upper Canada Bible Society in 1828 and of the Upper Canada Tract Society established in 1832. He also endowed these societies with funds to enable them to present prize books annually to school children and to the Sunday schools. DCB American Sunday-School Union hardcover

The first half of the report dated April 30 1839 is concerned with the American involvement in the Rebellion: the raids conducted by sympathizers in the northern states including extensive discussion of the seizure and burning of the steamer Sir Robert Peel. The second half constitutes a commentary on Lord Durhams report. The last four pages contain the draft of an address to the Queen requesting continued support and protection. Fleming 1373. TPL 2334. A rare and lengthy report on a proposed treaty between the United States and Great Britain to drop the duty on Canadian coal imported to the United States. The authors of the report claim that importing coal and iron from Canada would free up American labor and capital to concentrate on other industries. This report presents a thorough statistical analysis of the issues involved. Then as now the free trade argument had many detractors but the authors of this paper favor dropping the coal duties. The United States and Great Britain signed a fisheries treaty in 1854 but a provision on dropping the duties on coal was not included. OCLC locates only three copies of this rare report.
