198441302202Nanaimo British Columbia: Self-Published 1984. Book. Illus. by Weighill Richard. Very Good. Plastic Comb. Signed by Authors. First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 201 pages of profoundly fascinating and delightful illustrated history. Author's father b. 1870 left Yorkshire England with his young family for Canada in 1909 and arrived in Fife Lake Saskatchewan where they spent their first winter in a straw house. Author was born in a sod house in 1910 and moved with his family to Montana when he was 6 years old. At age 14 the family moved to Victoria B.C. and from there to Nanoose Bay further up Vancouver Island. Most pages contain brief text accompanied by the author's simple sketches of the way things were. He has stressed the most practical elements of daily life and survival. A priceless compilation of the challenges and genius of the pioneer. Examples include: how to hunt prairie antelope by wearing a white sheet; avoiding flying ants by erecting a pole to your wagon and hanging a coat at its top; uprooting stumps by tying them to nearby trees to be felled; cutting wood by rigging a buzzsaw to the back wheel of a Model "T" Ford truck; and many many more. Mentions Vancouver Island landmarks such as the Arlington Hotel Lantzville Hotel Quarterway Hotel and more. This book lends itself wonderfully to teaching youngsters the ways of the not-so-distant past. You will have great difficulty in putting it down. Self-Published Paperback
1997121a6133Canada: M. C. W. Enterprises 1997. Book. Fine. Paperback. Signed by Authors. Second Printing. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 288 pages. Dozens of archival black and white illustrations. "Concentrating on the history of the Air Station at Jericho Beach the author explores the unique circumstances that drove flying boat operations on the west coast. He chronicles the activities conducted by the fledgling Canadian Air Force and after 1 April 1924 the permanent Royal Canadian Air Force. The picture he weaves is one where a handful of men in a few outdated and underpowered machines establish a legacy of perseverance ingenuity and dedication undertaking missions which would not be out of place in today's headlines. Among the first in the world to fly such missions as fisheries forestry and anti-narcotic patrols these individuals provided peace-time support for Canadaa while still maintaining a military capability that would prove invaluable in the Second World War." - From Foreward by A.M. 2005761c9326Canada: C.P. Good. 2005. First Edition. Paperback. 1412057280 . "During WWII the RCAF developed five flying boat stations between Victoria and Prince Rupert for the defense of the Pacific Coast. It would be well into 1943 before airfields were built on the west coast in both Alaska and British Columbia suitable for serving the needs of military aircraft. It would be these airfields developed in a time of intense need that would evolve into the future airfields that exist along the entire Pacific Coast today. This then is the story of both these airfields and the air harbours that preceded them." - Preface. 282 pages. Index. References. Dozens of black and white reproductions of archival photos in text. Thirty-four black and white photographic plates. Maps of southwestern B.C. the district between Homathko Valley and the Waddington Group and the district between the Waddington Group and Knight Inlet. Frequent illuminating caustic and politically incorrect marginal notes by prior owner whose name D.M. Sinclair is stamped inside boards on title page and once to contents. We believe Mr. Sinclair was a resident of Duncan B.C. who managed a bank in Zeballos on Vancouver Island in the early 1940s during the local gold rush. The book itself is "an account of a trip through British Columbia's dense brush to Mt. Waddington or Mystery Mountain. The party in part British military officers explored and climbed the 15000 foot mountain." - Kim Whale. Reading copy only. Binding open at half-title page. Page xi loose but present. Dust jacket not included. Laid in is a small yellowed news clipping describing a brutish B.C. crime from decades past. Despite it's poor condition Mr. Sinclair's spicy marginal comments make this a particularly interesting copy. Edwards & Lort 3936 Whale 1648. Longmans, Green and Co. Hardcover
