William married Deborah Tilton in 1779 served with the British Army during the Revolutionary War immigrated to St. John then Parrtown New Brunswick in 1782 later moving to Queens County New Brunswick. Upon leaving Oxford Univ he traveled briefly in Germany and soon after took a teaching position at the University of New Brunswick 1909-1912. In 1912 he moved to the Carnegie Institute and later to Swathmore College.
