Good. 24mo 13.5cm 268p; 1inc.p. some interleaving for the purchaser’s ms. additions wanting a un-numbed page between 32-33 gutter stub remaining WANTING the original blue wraps with early plain paper wrapper added the blue spine paper is present with the date in black ink the title page is dust worn and the bottom front corner are chipped or later turned down to page 32 the last printed page is a table of longitude and latitudes stabbed stitched Copies of this date and earlier have become rare and are difficult to find. The one from the 1830;s and 1840's are now quite uncommon. <br /> <br /> The Quebec Almanac. Quebec 1780-1841. T.P.L. 707. Gagnon I-96. All volumes have sections in English and in French. Most of the volumes contain information on astronomy calendars remarkable events courts in Quebec duties and customs members of the executive and legislative councils of the Assembly and government departments lists of notaries surgeons pilots constables military organizations and religious and educational institutions. 18608725London: Hurst and Blackett. Very Good-. circa 1860. Hardcover. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; vii 350 2 pp. pages; Undated but probably published circa 1860. Extremities worn some fraying to head and tail of spine. Water stain to top half of frontispiece. Appears that the signatures may have been restitched some evidence of glue at hinges. Bookplate on front pastedown. Purple cloth covers elaborate blind stamped design on front and back covers with gilt stamps on front and spine. Frontispiece is of negroes dancing in costume - protected by tissue guard. Book is tight & solid. Two of the other titles listed on the title page Nature and Human Nature 1856 & Wise Saws and Modern Instances 1855-58 were published after the release of The Old Judge which was originally published in 1849. This book was considered one of his best looking at Nova Scotian life - "an Englishman is introduced to Nova Scotian life through the eyes of two narrators: the elderly Judge Sandford and his young nephew the lawyer Mr. Barclay." . Light dust soiling front wrapper has previous owner's name written at the top and one small tear; very good. Sir Francis Hincks 1807-1885 was a Canadian businessman politician and British colonial administrator. In 1878 he represented the federal government on the Ontario-Manitoba boundary commission. The commission's decision which was favorable to Ontario was subject to intense criticism and was not been adopted by the newly elected federal government. In this pamphlet Himcks reviews the complex history of the boundary question defends the work of the commission and argues that the government must either accept and adopt the award that had been made or formally appeal it. Ultimately an appeal was made and the award was upheld by the Privy Council in Britain in 1884. C. Blackett Robinson unknown

18449900044888Kingston ON: Chronicle & Gazette Office 1844. 1st printing. Stapled Wraps. pp. 20. 8vo. An original stitched printed pamphlet. Pages age-toned but otherwise unmarked. Overall in very good condition and a scarce item. Denis-Benjamin Viger 1774-1861 was a 19th-century politician lawyer businessman and Patriote movement member from Lower Canada. He was born in Montreal and his father had represented the Montreal East district in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1796 to 1800. In 1808 Viger married and he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Montreal East in 1808 and 1810 then in Leinster in 1810 and 1814 and in Kent in 1816 1820 1824 and 1827. Prominent in the Patriote movement and denounced as the owner of seditious newspapers Viger was imprisoned in 1838 when martial law was imposed in Lower Canada. He refused to post bail to protest the enforcement of martial law and demanded a regular trial. Consequently he was not released until May 1840. In 1841 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the United Canadas. From December 12 1843 to June 17 1846 he was one of the joint premiers of the Province of Canada. Viger died in Montreal in 1861. When this pamphlet was published Viger was one of the Canada's 'joint' Prime Ministers. There was at that time considerable discontent amongst French Canadians that he had abandoned their interests by acquiescing in the authority of the Governor-General appointed by the British. He sought to defend his actions in pamphlet form which prompted this 'anonymous' response actually written by Francis Hincks 1807-1885. A nice copy of this very handsome edition in full-leather binding with 5 raised bands a title-label in one panel gilt fleurons along backstrip gilt borders to covers marbled feps and pastedowns all edges marbled and gilt dentelles along edges. Cover detached but present with partial split to front-joint from crown and quarter-inch split to rear-joint at crown. Title- and half-title pages missing. Some rubbing to crown and foot of backstrip and some corner-wear. Marbled edging faded some occasional mild soiling to pages not affecting legibility and some very mild very occasional evidence of dampstain to upper margins not affecting text.
