"Introduites en Europe par les explorateurs, les pêcheurs de morue, les chasseurs de baleines ainsi que par quelques traiteurs audacieux, les fourrures d'origine nord-américaine pénètrent graduellement sur le marché français au cours du XVIe siècle. C'est de cette époque méconnue que traite le présent ouvrage et plus précisément des trente dernières années de ce siècle : une période cruciale durant laquelle quelques artisans du vêtement du quartier des Halles, à Paris, décident de remettre à la mode du jour une coutume vestimentaire oubliée depuis le XVe siècle, le chapeau de castor. Le contexte est bien sûr pour quelque chose dans le choix de ces artisans : la déstabilisation des réseaux d'approvisionnement des Flandres ou de la Baltique et la confrontation des pays en Europe s'unissent, à cette époque, pour faire monter le prix des pelleteries européennes et ouvrent, en quelque sorte, une brèche aux fourrures d'origine nord-américaine moins dispendieuses. Cette alchimie complexe qui s'opère à la fin des années 1570 entre marchés émergents, coutumes vestimentaires et fourrures nord-américaines est lourde de conséquences, puisqu'elle encourage de plus en plus de gens à croire en la viabilité d'un projet colonial en Amérique appuyé sur les pêcheries françaises à Terre-Neuve, mais surtout rentabilisé par l'exploitation des fourrures. Le livre présente une vision cohérente de cette période capitale dont l'histoire est longtemps demeurée au stade de la spéculation et qui n'a pas fini de livrer ses secrets et de réserver des surprises."

Most of the volumes contain information on astronomy calendars remarkable events courts in Quebec duties and customs members of the executive and legislative councils of the Assembly and government departments lists of notaries surgeons pilots constables military organizations and religious and educational institutions. William Brown began printing this valuable compendium in 1780 and after his death in 1789 it was continued by the Neilson family until 1841. It did not appear however in 1781 1783 1790 1793 or 1795. The only collection known to contain all the volumes issued was burned in the Library of Parliament in Montreal April 25 1849.
