Next, the narrative follows the often uneven growth of health services in Alaska, from the ships' surgeons on the earliest voyages of exploration and the unique health care system of the Russian-American Company to the American medical missions in the hectic times of the Gold Rush. The final section provides sketches of certain health problems having a profound impact on Alaska history, including smallpox, influenza, syphilis, tuberculosis, and alcohol abuse." 393 pages.
