23536Very good. Broadsheet undated but ca. 1915 based on contemporary newspaper ads. 20" x 7" printed in red and black on front and all black on verso. Horizontal folding creases otherwise very good. An attractive promotional piece issued by the New Home Land Company of Little Rock Arkansas and promoting excursion fares via the Missouri Pacific and Iron Mountain railroad and lands along the line of the Rock Island Railway Promotes Arkansas as "The Land of Homes" where "fertile soil long growing seasons and mild climate make prosperous farmers healthy families and happy homes." The text is targeted at midwesterners noting that "in Arkansas you can grow the same kind of crops and farm as you do in Missouri Iowa Illinois and Indiana" -- but with a longer growing season and at lower cost. The back includes detailed text relating to 15000 acres for sale near the new town of Sparkman along the Rock Island line. Not found in OCLC. unknown

189822932Centralia IL: Brown's Business College 1898. Softcover. Very good. Four-page printed circular 11.5" x 8.75" with photographic illustrations accompanied by a mimeographed letter on Brown's letterhead and original mailing envelope. Folding creases and light handling wear; very good. Brown's Business College was a chain of business colleges located in the Midwest started in Illinois in the 1870s by George W. Brown 1845-1918. Brown eventually grew the chain to at least 29 locations where students could expect to receive instruction in accounting business and office practice writing stenography and the elements of success in business generally. This four-page illustrated circular announces the opening of the Centralia Illinois location on September 5 1898. It offers a brief description of the town and notes that although it is smaller than other Browns' locations "its central location its easy access to all points of southern Illinois and the moderate prices of board for students give it an importance out of proportion to its immediate population." Inside is description of the benefits of business school the demand for graduates the course of study etc. Brown's Business College unknown

Stamps of Somerville Fire Department on page tops and bottoms and rear flyleaves. Day book for notes about various activities of the Somerville Massachusetts fire department from August 2 1908 - January 1 1909. Somerville is located right outside Boston and reference is made to Medford Boston American District Hill and Holt Cambridge and Somerville. Notes tests of fire alarm boxes receipt of various supplies for horse-drawn fire engines coal oats bridles shoeing soda reports of smoke and other safety hazards flooding of subways and a telephone call put to the City Home for their manure wagon. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall . 22421Softcover. Very good. 7" x 11" strong-tied photograph album containing 35 snapshots 3.5" x 5" corner-mounted one per page rectos only. A small album without captions but with good documentary content. The first two images are a nice Juneau street scene and a shot of the Alaska Air Transport Terminal in the Juneau harbor. These are followed by some rural scenes showing country roads and houses that we suspect are outside Juneau and several shots of a terminal where cargo is being either loaded from rail car to ship or vice versa. From there three shots show a ship's passage presumably across the Gulf of Alaska from Juneau to Kodiak as the remainder of the images 20 seem to be from Kodiak. There are several nice images of the Kodiak dock and harbor several of a rural road and house a view looking down at the town from a hillside and many shots of the beautiful Russian Orthodox church. unknown

Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward 1873-1879 regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 Sept. 5 and Dec. 5 1873 are from Jos. H. McKeehan an attorney in Philadelphia who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 Dec. 18 1873 is from the Village Record a newspaper in West Chester Pa. with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 Nov. 26 1875 is from John Smith of Ridley Park about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Letter #5 Sept. 8 1879 from the superintendant of the Government Paper Mill in Dalton Mass. complaining about the appointment of counters and watchmen at the mill presumably to Ward as a congressman. William Ward 1837-1895 studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1859. He opened a practice in Chester; was involved in real estate and banking; served as a member of the Chester city council and as city solicitor; and was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware County in the 45th 46th and 47th Congresses 1877-1883. Brown 1/4 leather mottled paper over boards with "Halifax Township" possibly indicating former Township ownership gilt on leather label on front panel. Leather is chipped with some loss at both spine extremities; board edges and corners are rubbed. Former ownership inscription of W. J. Daniel Elizabethville Dauphin Co. PA" on front pastedown dated 1915. Front endpapers show soiling and a stain that bleeds through lightly onto the first plate. 14 pp. index illus. w/ 6 hand-colored plates No. 1 shows approx. 1" square of loss to blank portion of page. Interior shows occasional light soiling with a dime-sized soil mark on the top edge of each leaf near the binding gutter. Cantonment Leavenworth became on the death of Snelling Fort Snelling which continues to stand at the confluence of the present day Minnesota River and the Mississippi. General Rufus Dawes 1838-1899 who rose to command of the Iron Brigade during the Civil War. This regiment was composed of the 6th Wisconsin 7th Wisconsin 2nd Wisconsin 19th Indiana and later the 24th Michigan. The Iron Brigade fought in nearly all the great battles in the east that the Army of the Potomac was engaged in from Second Bull Run to the Petersburg campaign and had an instrumental roll at Gettysburg. Book consists of a funeral address by Rev. William Roe an address by one of Dawes' sons and an address by Dawes presented to the Society of the Army of the Tennessee in 1881.
