Text clean and complete but lacking rear wrapper front wrapper detached and chipped some pages chipped at the corners spine broken in several spots. The Meteor was a fast steamer that had been built to pursue Confederate privateers but was never purchased by the United States government as the Civil War ended before the ship was needed. Her owners put her up for sale in late 1865 and soon entered negotiations for a sale to the Chilean government. Because Chile was in the process of preparing for war with Spain in January 1866 the United States seized the ship for violating the Neutrality Act. Represented by William Maxwell Evarts the ship's owners put up a vigorous defense to the charges which is reported here. Little, Brown paperback books

The Presentation Copy of the Honorable Will H. Hays his name stamped in gilt bottom edge front cover. Hays managed Warren G. Harding's successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers.
