Chips to the leather splitting at the joints rear inner hinge split and separating rear cover loose moisture residue affecting the rear hinge and last 16 sheets street maps leaving one to two inches of the map stuck to its facing page at the bind. Some tearing/chipping to some edges light sweating to a few preliminaries but most pages unaffected and clean. Still a solid working volume with most pages very good. . Fair. Hard. 1st. 1899. The spine ends corners and edges of the book covers have rubbing bumping fraying and chips missing. The covers have noticeable spots of ground-in dirt and generalized rubbing. The lettering on the spine has started to rub. The front inner hinge has cracked. The text pages are generally clean but the book could use a good restitching as sections are loose. The rear endpaper is missing. The first twenty pages or so have spots of foxing. "Afterwards she Yelverton led an itinerant life and supported herself by writing about her travels. Francis Farquhar wrote that she "spent the summer of 1870 in Yosemite where she attached herself to the Hutchings family and made eyes at John Muir. He escaped to the woods but not before she had noted enough of his conversation and his ways of life to make him over into Kenmuir the hero of her novel." Wikipedia . Hurd and Houghton hardcover

From the collection of noted Mammoth Cave historian and author Harold Meloy his small name label front paste down. Bound in contemporary quarter black leather over marbled boards without the original wrappers Very Good moderate toning throughout. vi 7-61 pages. "Doctors had written about the cave before but with Charles W. Wright M.D. of the Kentucky School of Medicinein Louisville a new era of Mammoth Cave medical authors began.Wright was present in Mammoth Cave during the first descent of a deep pit known as the Maelstrom and he was one of the first explorers of Diamond Caverns. His book The Mammoth Cave of Kentucky was published in 1858 and again in 1859. In 1860 he revised and enlarged it. As A Guide Manual to the Mammoth Cave the 1860 edition became the standard reference book about the cave until it was replaced nine years later by Dr. Binkerd's book. Even after Binkerd's book was replaced by Dr. Forwood's book Wright's Guide Manual was still in demand. It was republished in 1870 and again in 1875." Very scarce. <br/><br/>Attracted by the ideals of the "Declaration of Independence" Fanny Wright traveled extensively through the U.S.A. tracking how those ideals were being realized. In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. All in all Fanny Wright became one of the most remarkable women of the first half of the 19th century: among other accomplishments being the first woman to write this work the first travelogue by a woman. Modern binding is superb clean and handsome; text block is clean and only ever-so-slightly age toned with bit of soiling to preliminary leaves; there is the occasional spot of foxing but the majority of the text block is as bright as the day it was published. A tight and unusually attractive first edition of this early study the first of eight volumes published under Worthen's direction with assistance from J.D. Whitney Leo Lesquereux and Henry Engelmann. All called for foldout maps and plans some partly colored are present and mainly in superb condition with only the two largest of them showing some edgewear and bearing expert archival strengthening. Worthen was a renowned if self-taught leading geographer of his day and served as State Geologist from 1858 to 1875. All in all an exceptional far above average copy.
