Discharge papers for Thomas Fulford a private in Company B 64th Regiment Infantry Indiana Volunteers dated Sept. 30 1863 at St. Louis Mo by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In left margin handwritten in red ink "Phthisis-hereditary-developed by exposure. He is unfit for the Invalid Corps". Signed at bottom "By Order of Maj. Gen. Schofield" and then signed "J.K. Hudson" with more writing below illegible. Stamped in red ink "paid by Robert Smith St. Louis Oct. 2 1863 Paymaster U.S.A." Also another stamp faint with just the word Ohio at right side above top fold. Verso bears handwritten "Discharge Certificate of Thomas F. Fulford Late of Co. B 64th Regt. Indiana Vols. Infantry". Private Fulford went on to live to the age of 68 fathering 8 children. At his death in 1899 his obituary referred to him as "well known old soldier of Washington Township". Major General John McAllister Schofield 1831 -1906 held major commands during the Civil War and later served as U.S. Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Flexible leather album front cover stamped in gilt with title "Autographs" surrounded by gilt flourishes spine decorated in gilt all edges gilt. 98 pp 19 of them blank leaving 79 with manuscript and 78 signatures 4 with writing in Japanese as well as English 3 with full page calligraphic drawings of birds with 38 photographs in the form of stamps including one oversize stamp measuring 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" of Mrs. C.C. Gaines wife of the President of Eastman College the other stamps all measure 7/8" x 1". The rest of the stamps are males either students or faculty. The photographic stamps were done by C. H. Gallup of Poughkeepsie NY. The album belonged to student Clif. J. Prosser. Very Good the leather rubbed at edges rear leather cover about half loosened from the board light soiling. A wonderful early Eastman Business College autograph album perhaps from the beginning of the use of photographic stamps. . SIGNED. Album. Very Good/No Jacket As Issued. 5" x 7 3/4" . Hardcover books

A collection of small religious books two were published Richmond both are Psalms and Hymns 1867 the rest NY 3 Bibles 1829 1864 1869 or Philadelhia Book of Common Prayers 1868. Range in height from 3 7/8" to 5 5/8". Together with an Autograph Book no publisher or date but inscription dated 1866. All were owned by a Southern minister in Memphis named J. O.James Owen Stedman and his daughter Ella Owen Stedman. Stedman was pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Shelby County from 1854-1868. He then helped to found the Alabama Street Presbyterian Church in Memphis in 1868. The autograph book with one page presentation inscription to Stedman dated Dec. 1866 with ten signatures of elders and deacons of the church on 3 pages. No further autographs or writing in the book. Autograph book good loss of half the spine leather the book quite rubbed. The small Bibles etc. are Very Good to Near Fine. A unique collection of post Civil War Memphiana. . Leather. Very Good. Gary Kurutz writes in the Dorothy Sloan Zamorano 80 Catalogue: Tyler's narrative has long been considered the authoritative work on this heroic battalion of Mormon volunteers. The battalion numbering about 500 men was organized at Council Bluffs Iowa in July 1846.After reaching Santa Fe they headed to California following the Gila River. Field 602: "The fur traders of the eighteenth century.in coasting along the shores of Vancouver's and Nootka Sounds carried with them some of the words of each of the tribes who they visited; until at the mouth of the Columbia River they found a quick-witted people who adopted the mongrel jargon they heard from the lips of strangers and blended the fragments of twelve native tongues with some English and French terms into a sort of language possessing nearly 500 words.
