Encouraged his landowning father, Mifflin received art instruction first from his father and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He then studied in Germany becoming a good painter, as well as a good photographer later in life. Believing that paint fumes were damaging his health, Mifflin stopped painting to concentrate on writing poetry, specifically sonnets.
