183810608New York: John S. Taylor Publisher and Bookseller 1838. 50 xxviii blank 1 errata. Scattered light foxing Disbound. Good. The troubles began as soon as the University started up with the appointment of Dr. Mathews a "rash and ambitious" man as Chancellor in 1831. He alienated the faculty almost immediately and became a "fruitful source of embarrassments and convulsions." Fiscally unsound he "lost" the financial records; academically suspect he is "more intent upon gorgeous embellishments vain parade and mere effect than upon building up solidly and wisely an institution of learning." This regrettably is the view of "the whole Faculty of Science and Letters." The last straw-- or as this pamphlet refers to it "explosion"-- occurred when Mathews ejected seven teachers "from the duties of their Professorships." All his deficiencies are examined here with great care. FIRST EDITION. Sabin 14827. AI 51966 5. John S. Taylor, Publisher and Bookseller unknown books

The Publishers' Preface informs that the purposes of the book are "first to satisfy an imperious public curiosity which has thus far been only partially gratified by the public journals." Secondarily publication was stimulated by the nation's first income tax enacted to finance the War. "If all the Revenue Districts in the country are gone over and the results recorded with the same care as is here done the government will possess an immense mass of correct information upon which to base its action." The largest annual income reported was over $1.8 million A.T. Stewart. William Astor reported $838000. 160000 heads of families or "about one in eight has a taxable income and only one in sixteen has a taxable income of more than $1000." 185411905New-York: American Temperance Union 1854. 1854. 16pp stitched. Light tan and wear old rubberstamp number Good.

Despite his "known character as a high-minded honorable man" Governor Seymour vetoed a bill that would prohibit the sale of intoxicating liquors. Seymour's argument that the bill constitutes an excessive governmental intrusion into private lives is nonsense: the traffic in liquor causes "murders and robberies and riots" and other social evils; moreover a State has constitutional power to regulate "its own internal traffic" as the U.S. Supreme Court has said. "Friends of temperance! We have a great conflict before us. We have fought long and we have fought well. The rotten license system can not stand." The good guys will win eventually although "the rum interest is a mighty power."
Sabin 92840. Not in Eberstadt Decker BEAL. American Temperance Union unknown books

18421240New York: Wm. G. Boggs printer 1842. 8vo. 46 pp. 1 blank f.

Mayor Morris refused to swear in Heath and Roome as assessors claiming election irregularity. The state supreme court held: "The loss of the votes in one of the four districts into which the Sixth ward was divided did not defeat the election in that ward. If the votes of the First district are to be considered as wholly out of the question in consequence of the riotous proceedings which drove the Inspectors from the room where they were canvassing the result of the election must then be determined from the votes of the three remaining districts." Now that the War is over "it may not be unuseful to take a short view of the causes of the war its prominent events and future consequences." That is it is time for Republicans to pour out their wrath upon the Federalists whose behavior especially at the Hartford Convention verged on treason. "Such was the time chosen by those sons of discord to disseminate an infamous manifesto in which they villified your rulers abused your constitution and menaced your government with 'more mighty efforts' in case of non-compliance with their insolent demands."
