Gutes Exemplar; Umschlag stw. gering berieben. - Englisch. - Around 1900 portrait photography freed itself from the dictates of painting and the latter's representational function. The photographer's dialogue with his models determined the makeup of a picture. Portraits in Germany and Austria eloquently attested to the middle-class's evolving definition of self while powerfully demonstrating the rise of photography as an independent artistic force. The salon portrait, with its refined and elaborate composition, slowly transformed itself. A new sense of individuality and spontaneity began coming to the fore as early as the fin de siecle. Yet it was the trauma of World War I that brought about a truly undreamt-of radicalization of the human portrait: extreme close-ups, experimentation with light and shadow, and the game of ever-changing masks. In the eight chapters of this volume, the authors delve into the various factors that shaped portrait photography from the turn of the century to shortly before the outbreak of World War II. In this arc from individual to typical expression, they explore the question of the end of a tradition as well as the problems inherent in the fascist idea of an archetypal "face of the people." A number of self-portraits are then considered from the vantage point of the photographers themselves. With its nearly 130 portraits by over 45 photographers, this book offers a splendid panorama of the development of portrait photography in Germany and Austria in the first three decades of the 20th century. "Washington Irving, an author, biographer, historian, and diplomat, completed his first major work, a satire of contemporary local history and politics entitled A History of New-York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Diedrich Knickerbocker in 1809. Prior to its publication, Irving started a promotional hoax (not unlike some modern-day publicity stunts?) by placing fake missing persons advertisements in local newspapers asking for help in locating Diedrich Knickerbocker. As a continuation of the hoax, Irving also published a notice purported to be written by the proprietor of the hotel where Knickbocker was staying, in which he threatened to publish a manuscript 'left behind' by Knickerbocker if the hotel bill was not paid. From 'The Author?s Apology': The main object of my work, in fact, had a bearing wide from the sober aim of history, but one which, I trust, will meet with some indulgence from poetic minds. It was to embody the traditions of our city in an amusing form; to illustrate its local humors, customs and peculiarities; to clothe home scenes and places and familiar names with those imaginative and whimsical associations so seldom met with in our new country, but which live like charms and spells about the cities of the old world, binding the heart of the native inhabitant to his home." Gutes Exemplar; der illustr. Umschlag gering berieben. - Englisch. - With 225 illustrations, 196 in full colour ... For a variety of reasons - warfare, burial looting, recycling, etc. - very little ancient African goldwork has survived. This volume presents a generous selection of the finest pieces of West African goldwork owned by one of the world's foremost collections of African art, the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Geneva. It illustrates and discusses a wide range of ornamental objects, including head-dresses, rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and items of royal regalia. Many of these pieces, dating for the most part from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, are decorated with figurative motifs -birds, fish, fruit, and the like - which convey a message by referring to local proverbs. This is the first detailed study of goldwork produced south of the Sahara, and concentrates on two regions: the Sahel and the central West African forest. The historical and cultural context in which the pieces were made is explained, as well as the techniques employed in their creation. The book constitutes a unique survey of the little-known splendours of the African goldsmith's art.
