Modern blue half morocco gilt blue morocco title label centrally-placed on upper cover 'Voyage aux / Etats-Unis / 1876-77'<br/> <br/> A fine series of original watercolour views of Lake George N.Y. and elsewhere - including one watercolour of Central Park New York.<br/> <br/> From the heading 'Voyage aux Etats-Unis / 1876-1877' on the first page of this album as well as from the wording of the captions to the drawings it is clear that these highly accomplished watercolours are the work of a French-speaking visitor to North America in 1876-1877. They include 14 views of Lake George and its vicinity including one of Caldwell now Lake George Village and one of Tea Island. Also included is a single view of a rocky outcrop and trees in Central Park another of Glenn Falls on the Hudson and a third of the Montmorency Falls just outside Quebec as well as two fine but rather unexpected Swiss views of Amphion Lake Geneva both dated 1877. unknown

McGuire upon his Retirement from the Office of Surveyor of the Port of New York" and followed by remarkably accomplished manuscript leaves heightened with gold an original portrait of McGuire a few nautical themed watercolors several leaves of facsimile signatures and McGuire's original 1894 appointment to the post of Surveyor of Customs signed by President Grover Cleveland. A very good copy of this exceedingly scarce pamphlet. OCLC lists only 13 copies including those at Columbia Cornell Yale Harvard and the New York Historical Society.<br/> <br/> Attributed to Isaac Bronson by F. Redlich in "The Molding of American Banking" 1868 volume 1 page 308. "Isaac Bronson was a highly successful financier of the Jacksonian era who was also one of the period's most original and influential banking theorists. Bronson accumulated his very considerable fortune in New York primarily by judicious personal money-lending operations on long-term bonds and mortgages at a cautious 7 per cent annual return supplemented by successful ventures in land speculation. In addition to wealth he had by the 1830's acquired a weighty reputation for sober financial conservatism and was regarded as an authoritative exponent of sound banking principles. Prominent in the financial community he had long thrown his weight as a sound banking theorist against the "wild-cat" practices of the then rampant state banks." --Venit A. 1945. Old horizontal and vertical creases where folded as issued with splits along a couple of folds expertly sealed on the verso; restoration to some tears and small chips to the margins most of them easily concealed when matting or framing; the whole now archivally mounted on flush-cut sturdy Japanese paper; a very presentable example of a desirable ephemeral publication. Engraved by Robert Loudan from a drawing by Thomas Sulman this fine bird's-eye view was issued as an 'Extra supplement to the Illustrated London News August 19 1876'. It shows the island of Manhattan from Battery Park to Central Park maritime traffic on the Hudson and East Rivers and the recently-completed piers of the Brooklyn Bridge. An apparently unrecorded broadside in eleven sections outlining regulations concerning the handling of meat poultry and other food in Centre Market in Albany New York. This was one of three public markets established in 1836; the others were the North Market and South Market. The laws address hours of operation allocation of stalls licensing costs of permits and the salary of the market's superintendent. Section ten repeals previous laws and section eleven decrees that this law will take effect on 8 February. The printer of this broadside was located near the market on the corner of South Pearl and State Street. Not in Evans. No copies listed on OCLC. unknown

In Hebrew and English on facing pages. Formerly Singerman 1780 now merged into Singerman 1667 as vol II variant 1 Thalmessinger & Cahn. <br> The second of two volumes vol. 1 Daily prayers & vol. 2. Prayers for the Day of Atonement this volume substantially reworked by Adler and published 1860 vol. I and 1863 vol. 2 here. Together these comprise the First Edition of Samuel Adler's revised edition of Leo Merzbacher's 1855 Prayer-Book. <br> Despite the modest title-page Adler's production here was not merely a revision but rather an entire reworking with additions and alterations to the liturgy. Rabbi Leo Merzbacher's original version of the prayers was quite traditional. "As resourceful and accomplished a liturgist as Merzbacher proved to be he seldom sought to .willfully turn aside from the traditional cannon" Friedland p. 36. Samuel Adler on the other hand Merzbacher's successor at Temple Emanu-El of New York had no such reservations about adopting radical change to the structure of the prayer-book. In his version of the "Order of Prayer" Adler did not rely on sources in Jewish tradition rather he changed the prayers according to his subjective views of how synagogue services should be conducted. See Eric Lewis Friedland Brandeis University dissertation The Historical and Theological Development of the non-Orthodox Prayerbooks in the United States 1967. <br> Indeed it was precisely this 1860-1863 version of the "Order of Prayer" that was adopted by Temple Emanuel in New York and all subsequent issues of the "Order of Prayer" utilized this version containing Samuel Adler's revisions. The Union Prayerbook itself was largely based on Adler's 1860-1863 revisions here. <br> Consequently this prayer-book was also the cause of much controversy. Orthodox Rabbi Bernard Illowy of St. Louis fumed that whomsoever utilized this "so-called" prayer-book was to be "entirely excluded from all religious communion" see Michael A. Meyer Response to Modernity: A History of the Reform Movement 1995 p. 237. <br> <br> Leo Merzbacher 1809-1856 received his Rabbinic ordination from the celebrated Rabbi Moses Sofer of Pressburg the "Chasam Sofer" the leading opponent of the Reform movement. Merzbacher immigrated to America in the 1840's "and was the first Reform rabbi in the country. After serving at Anshe Chesed and Rodeph Sholom in New York Merzbacher became the rabbi of Emanu-El the first Reform temple in the city.The 1855 edition of This prayer book was the first Reform edition issued in America for general use" Goldman. Merzbacher adopted changes in synagogue custom such as the prominent use of an organ and eradicating the observance of the second day of festivals. Samuel Adler 1809-1891 replaced Merzbacher in Temple Emanuel in 1857 following the latter's death where he served until 1891. 18609034New York: Lith. of W. Faust 105 Nassau St 1860. Broadside wine list 25.5 x 15.5 cm. 1 page. Porcelain card decorated in chromolithograph with text in blue and red. A very early wine list from an important New York hotel and dining establishment. The hotel was at the corner of Broadway and Eleventh Street across from Grace Church and Rectory. Both the hotel and the church were designed by the architect James Renwick Jr. Named for its original owner Denis Julien the St. Denis Hotel opened in 1853 just in time for the Crystal Palace Exhibition. The building was leased to William Taylor in 1875 who incorporated the Taylor Saloon into the facility. The list features Clarets from Finke Merman of Bordeaux mostly from 1847 and 1848. And French whites including 1847 Latour Blanche and 1847 d'Yquem. Champagne Sherries and Madeiras are also included. A solid piece of printing from a firm more known for fruit labels. Verso contains an unattributed primitive pencil drawing of a horse. Some darkening to the top edge of the recto. Lith. of W. Faust, 105 Nassau St unknown
18295234New York: New York Protestant Episcopal Press 1829. Very good. Broadside 10.5 x 9 inches. Old folds foxing creasing and toning with substantial but irregularly-trimmed margins. An unrecorded New York broadside advertising the opening of the New York Protestant Episcopal Press NYPEP and related activities at No. 46 Lumber Street in New York City in 1829. The text states that "PRINTING of every description will be executed for Churches Bible and Common Prayer-Book Societies Tract Societies Missionary or Education Societies and all other religious institutions of the Protestant Episcopal Church at the lowest rates and in the best manner" and that the new establishment will "also be the publication office of The Family Visiter and Sunday School Magazine; and of The Children's Magazine." The text also includes notes about the business of the organization as well as notices to "Booksellers who are members of the Protestant Episcopal Church" and "secretaries of religious and charitable associations." In addition to their printing and binding work the broadside states that the NYPEP will take charge of the depositories of five New York institutions -- the General Protestant Episcopal Sunday Union the New York Bible and Common Prayer-Book Society the Auxiliary New York Bible and Common Prayer-Book Society the New York Protestant Episcopal Tract Society and the New York Protestant Episcopal Sunday School Society. The bottom half of the broadside is taken up with a listing of the organization's Board of Trustees "Other Managers" the general agent book-keeper printer William Van Norden and binder Christian Brown along with a postscript with details on various forthcoming publications by the press. William Van Norden was a prolific printer in New York in the first half of the 19th century producing more than just religious works. He printed the collected works of Benjamin Franklin Hannah Moore's memoir and the Proceedings of the New York Historical Society among many other works and later helped produce The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. Butler and John C. Spencer holds a celebrated status in the legal history of the state. An early owner of this copy has extra-illustrated the work with letters by William Allen Butler 3 Benjamin Franklin Butler 3 Duer 1 and Spencer 1 Francis L. In 1814 Columbia University Medical School merged into the College of Physicians and Surgeons a move that was made in an attempt to stymie what was then seen as a period of decline for the medical school. By the date of this report there was widespread feuding between professors and trustees. The Regents appointed a committee to visit the College and to make a report to the legislature on means of correcting the situation. This is their report! Westervelt presented an original petition to Newburgh Lodge 309 asking if a new lodge could be organized in Newburgh “believing that the best interest of Masonry would be best subserved thereby.â€</p> <br /> <p>A charter was granted to Hudson River Lodge 607 on June 8 1866. Forty-six signatures are appended to the document. Many are designated “true†and a few are designated “non affiliatedâ€. David A. Scott was voted master; G. Frederick Wiltsie senior warden; Samuel Stanton junior warden and John Alsdorf as first secretary. </p> <br /> <p>John L. Westervelt 1826-after 1880 the petitioner was a silversmith whose specialty was repairing and replating Gorham objects. He married Catherine Gorham of New York.  “After the Lodge had been declared open the Master arose and on behalf of Bro. John L. Westervelt presented to the Lodge a full set of solid silver jewels for the use of the offices. The following resolution was then offered and adopted unanimously: Resolved That the thanks of this Lodge be and are hereby tendered to Brother John L. Westervelt for the very beautiful set of jewels which he has so generously presented to the Lodge.â€Â History of Hudson River Lodge.</p> <br /> <p>Charles Estabrook 1823-1900 bookstore owner and librarian at Newburgh Free Library signed as did Chancy M. Leonard mayor of Newburgh who died in 1874. Another jeweler and silversmith Thomas W. Purdy ca. 1830-after 1880 also signed. David A. This is a promotional by the railroad to encourage people to locate in Northern New Jersey due to crowded conditions in NYC. They promote that to build a home in Northern New Jersey and New York state is the way to go and point out the wonderful convenient and speedy service available to and from NYC via their railroad company. Provided are home plans showing that a three bedroom home to an eight bedroom home can be built for a low of $2000.00 to a high of $5000.00. Recommended counties in New Jersey are Bergen Passaic and Essex and Rockland County in New York. The railroad company provides most of the information for one to consider moving to the areas where expenses are considerably less there is room for growth and they can supply economic and regular transportation. This delightfully printed promotional catalogue for the millinery department at Hugh O'Neill's Dry Goods Store whose impressive building at Sixth Ave. & 21st St. was an impressive domed building now serving as condominiums. Noted for their inventive marketing catalogs and souvenir chromolithograph cards this one illustrates the many Victorian trimmed hats which could be purchased "at the lowest possible price" including: Bo Peep Misses Capulet Easter Hedrick Ormonde & Bon Ton bonnets as well as Virot Gypsy Queen and Reckless hats. Founded in 1870 the Irish-American O'Neill d. 1902 opened his distinctive store designed by Mortimer Merritt in 1887 and by 1892 employed 2500 people and added a fifth floor to his store. After his death the O'Neill store later merged with Adams Dry Goods and closed down in 1907. Minor wear to the extremities with minor loss to lower portion of the wings. A very good bright copy. Retailers claimed that auctions were inconsistent with regular trade and injurious to the interests of the city. The auctioneers respond by asserting that they help conduct the commerce of the city and that they combat monopolies and speculation. Recipes are not attributed but there is an excellent two-page description of the "Work of the Association" with names of the officers of the society and its goals. includes two tipped in recipes at the rear Mushroom Soup and Cheese Custard which is labeled as a "West India Recipe" and there is a third recipe written on a blank Baked Onions. A bit of foxing to a few pages previous owner's name in pencil to a few pages otherwise very good or better in decorated blue-gray cloth. Scarce. OCLC locates four copies; not in Brown or Cook. An interesting advertisements promotes farms for sale priced from $15.00 to $40.00 an acre. A long list of hotels boarding houses and private families on or near the route of the New York Ontario and Western Railway is provided. Grizzly Adams came West in 1849 and forsook the gold mines for life in the Western and California wilderness where he acquired a legendary reputation for hunting grizzly bears and fending off Indians. Cover panel offers title actors manager etc. as well as printed in red ink on the right side front carries the notice "8th Street Theatre - - Grand Opening Week Commencing Monday September 4th" which would most likely have been 1882. The second panel offers a full-page advertisement for Merchant's Gargling Oil the company sponsoring the show. Merchant's Gargling Oil is “a Liniment for Man and Beast" a catch-all salve first produced by George W. Merchant a druggist in 1833. The salve was made up of petroleum soap ammonia water oil of amber iodine tincture benzine and water and supposedly would cure anything . burns scalds scratches foot rot on sheep roup in poultry hemorrhoids toothaches etc. Panel 3 offers general information about the play followed by a synopsis for all three acts. The rear panel offers a full-page woodcut illustration showing Adams on horseback rescuing innocent settlers in the wilderness from Indians. 1 1/2" closed tear to fold and with a 1" closed tear to side panels. Good.<br /> <br /> "TAXATION! grinding annually returning steadily increasing taxation is eating out the substance of the people of New York. It has become an oppression." This "misgovernment" is the result of Whig misrule "produced by the improvident reckless and dishonest policy pursued in regard to our canals."
