186223682Albany: Weed Parsons and Co 1862. Wraps. Scarce Civil War era pamphlet on the militia law of 1862 during the period in which both northern and southern states had to rely on States' militias to meet their troop requirements.

At the beginning of the War neither North or South was adequately prepared for war; the total peacetime army consisted of only 16000 men. President Lincoln following the taking of Fort Sumter had to call up 75000 militia men. New York's share of this total was seventeen regiments of 780 men each or 13280 men.

There was also a shortage of weapons uniforms and trained officers. The States' militia regiments were of uneven quality and none had any combat training. Militia drilling consisted mostly of parade ground marching and the individual units had never drilled together as part of a larger regiment.

The pamphlet includes an act to provide for the enrollment of the militia.; military forms and instructions Index and "An Act to Enforce the Laws and Preserve Order passed 1845". 8vo 110pp forms.

Original yellow printed paper wrappers stitch binding. Wrappers marked fox spotting to lower corner title page otherwise very good condition. OCLC: 2970647. Weed, Parsons and Co unknown

Light worming to about seven leaves no text affected light tanning and occasional foxing throughout. Very good. 688151-173175-245 i.e. 253pp. p.174 omitted in printing. Folio. A major early New York imprint from the press of William Bradford the "pioneering printer of the English middle colonies" DAB and first printer of New York. Bradford 1663-1752 originally settled in Pennsylvania where he began operating a printing press in 1685 and a bookstore in 1688. Controversies within the Quaker community with Bradford supporting the dissident George Keith led to the temporary seizure of his types and paper in 1692 and in 1693 he moved to New York. The present documents are among the earliest official New York imprints.

This present collection of THE LAWS. is the third collection of New York laws after those of 1694 and 1710 and covers legislation passed from 1691 to 1713. Laws herein include acts "for quieting and settling the Disorders that have lately happened within this Province" 1691 "for restraining and punishing Privateers and Pyrates" 1693 and 1698 and "against Jesuites and Popish Priests" 1700 as well as numerous acts "for Regulating Slaves" and one for "Baptizing them" 1706. The index reflects the odd pagination in the volume which skips from page 88 to page 155. This is due in part to the fact that they are a composite of Bradford's various separately issued official publications of New York laws. The two leaves following the titlepage are an index the present copy being comprised of individually printed pages pasted together to form one double-sided leaf. EVANS 1636 1637 1638.
