In addition this agency worked to survey and produce detailed maps and renderings of the U.S. coast. These nautical survey maps commonly referred to as "T-sheets" provide fascinating insights into the history of the United States coastline which has and will continue to shift. These maps are the most important data source for understanding the physical and ecological characteristics of the U.S. shoreline. The present map is a highly detailed and accurate sea chart of the United States Atlantic Coast from Florida to North Carolina and an important historical view of the developing states. With most of the legislature's time taken up with questions of infrastructure particularly the Florida railroad Governor Madision S. Perry uses his annual address to warn of coming conflict with the north and to encourage the spread of slavery. This is a nicely-bound volume of the daily legislative log and the accompanying state office reports. The session ran from November 22 1858 to January 15 1859.<br/> <br/> In his prescient call for funding a militia an action that the legislature does not appear to have discussed seriously Gov. Perry warns that "the late elections in the non-slaveholding States forebode no good to us in the South. He would be a false sentinel who under the present aspect of affairs would cry peace" pp. 27–28. He then observes that many White Floridians are ambivalent about slavery and he encourages the legislature to make changes in the law to encourage slaveholding another action the lawmakers seem to have not spent much time on.<br/> <br/> Another subject that Perry devotes time to is the forcible removal of Native Americans from Florida. After twenty years of conflict the federal government had recently declared victory and ended the war. Both the governor and the legislature make appeals in this document to continue the effort until all the Seminoles and other tribes are gone from the state.<br/> <br/> 456 journal 70 reports pages. According to the daily log the print run of this issue was 700 copies. Contents heavily foxed; title page laid down on paper; some loss to the margins; fifth gathering duplicated in error; corner loss to final leaves of the reports section with no loss of text. Mr. Livingston's signed copy of a pamphlet pertaining to Florida as a suitable "health resort" for Northern patients by Frederick Lente MD. Dr. Lente 1823 - 1883 was the primary surgeon at the West Point Foundry Cold Spring NY during the Civil War. He served at the Foundry from 1851 to 1870; later he was head of gynecology and children's health at the University of the City of New York and founder of the American Academy of medicine.<br /> <br /> Livingston was a member of a family of the Hudson River Valley which at one point owned some 900000 acres of land and about three dozen mansions in the area giving the area the nickname "Livingston Valley".<br /> <br /> 8vo 56pp errata slip bound in. A short but impactful and somewhat unusual document memorializing the inheritance of a young slave named "Anderson aged about twenty years" from a Florida estate in the penultimate year of the Civil War. Anderson was formerly owned by Daniel Love of Gadsden County and is here inherited by "John Shaw for Margaret E. Shaw" by Love's executor and likely brother Edward Love. The document is dated New Year's Day 1864. An unusual occurrence of a Florida slave being transmitted to a woman through inheritance. January 1 unknown

18903620Gainesville Fl: Daily Advocate Job Print 1890. Very good. 4pp. on a single folded sheet. Mild soiling minor toning old folds. A seemingly unrecorded real estate promotional leaflet issued by Louis A. Barnes and Watson Porter local land attorneys working in and around Gainesville Florida. The pair is seeking prospective purchasers for "much valuable" homestead lands now available for settlement again after being abandoned "under the homestead or pre-emption laws." They also offer services for claims on "Spanish Grants" land warrants soldiers' homestead rights and more. Interestingly one of the two lawyers here Watson Porter previously served as a surgeon in the Third U.S. Colored Troops. In Florida Porter and his wife Olivia established O.A. Porter's Addition to Gainesville selling lots exclusively to African-American people who did not have ready access to land or financing; the neighborhood survives today in Gainesville as Porters Quarters. Porter also served as the Principal of the Union Academy a freedman's school and was a strong supporter of Josiah T. Walls the only African-American man from Gainesville to be elected and seated twice to the U.S. House of Representatives. Some of the land and services in question in the present pamphlet were almost certainly provided to African-American settlers. The pamphlet was printed by the Gainesville-area Daily Advocate which operated in the area between 1884 and 1890. No copies located in OCLC. Daily Advocate Job Print unknown

Folding map is of the Atlantic & Gulf Railroad and shows the lines from Savannah to Bainbridge spur to Albany and connections in Florida from Tallahassee to Baldwin and Jacksonville and to Cedar Key. The booklet describes stations and points of interest in southern Georgia and Florida as well as other railroads towns and points of interest in Florida and southern Georgia. 1886LIST112Cincinnati: St. Andrews Bay Railroad and Land Company 1886. Various Formats. Near Fine. An unusual collection of ephemera relating to the early development of the area of the Florida Panhandle east of Pensacola and an interesting ephemeral window into the type of land schemes that led to the population of Florida by northerners. In the late nineteenth century the area of Port Panama City in the Florida Panhandle was largely undeveloped though the town had strategic interest as a supplier of salt for the confederacy. In the 1880s the St. Andrews Bay Railroad and Land and Company was the second of two companies to sell land in the St. Andrews Bay region to unsuspecting northerners only to go bankrupt. The company promised to build a railroad from Alabama down to Southport crossing North Bay and eventually terminating in St. Andrews. Though the railway project was abandoned many people settled in the area as a result of the land sales. The company became known locally as the "Cincinnati Company."<br /> <br /> <br /> Includes: <br /> <br /> Warranty deeds for land sold to Lizzie Kegema Hosley of Somerville MA. 1886-1887.<br /> <br /> Letter from the St. Andrews Bay Railroad & Land Co to L.K.
