Offered here is a collection of letters and art sent from people incarcerated in the California State Prison system primarily from a husband â€œP.â€ and wife â€œA.â€ to Pâ€™s mother and stepfather. A. who served a shorter sentence than P. worked as an inmate-firefighter. Currently about twenty to thirty percent of Californiaâ€™s firefighters are incarcerated people and about ten percent of those are women; they work cutting the fireline receiving little compensation and at a significantly higher risk of injury than both their non-incarcerated counterparts and other prison laborers. They also are not eligible to become firefighters upon release due to Californiaâ€™s laws about both employment and EMT certification following a felony conviction.1 A. writes of her training: â€œIâ€™ve been training for camp. Its realy realy hard. This has got to be the hardest thing Iâ€™ve ever done in my life. Well Im gonna make this my last trip to prison well I hope so anyway.â€ January 12 2009 She also writes from the field that â€œIts very hard and dangerouse but I guess Im used to itâ€ June 6 2009 with later letters giving more detailed descriptions; for instance: â€œIm not in San Diego right now because my crew and my cousins crew got sent to all the fires that are up North = we left on the 4th and weâ€™ve been on the road and to a couple of fires since I donâ€™t know when we are going back but Im making money! yesterday I worked a 24 hour shift and we got back to have our down time to rest this morning. Its very tireing and hard I felt like I was hiking forever! Right know Im up in Shasta County its beautif up here and Iâ€™ve never been this far from home befor.â€ August 14 2009 A. wanted to save up to buy a car. She wrote that firefighting is â€œhard work for a dollar a dayâ€ December 14 2009â€”in 2023 the inmate-firefighter pay rate was raised to an astounding 16 to 74 cents per hour with a maximum daily rate of $5.80 to $10.24.2 P. on a longer sentence in various higher-security facilities grappled with boredom loneliness and the bureaucracy involved in trying to contact his wife and family. The prisons where he was incarcerated were frequently on lockdown for months at a time including the Corcoran Substance Abuse Treatment Facility which locked down in June of 2009 following a gang-related riot. He often describes being hungry and not allowed to go to the commissary either because of lockdowns or just because â€œthere not letting Hispanics goâ€ January 30 2011. One way he seemed to have dealt with his circumstances was through art. Over time his package requestsâ€”incarcerees can only be sent packages through approved third-party vendors which contract with prisonsâ€”included alongside toothpaste and deodorant art supplies and even a typewriter and books on â€œhow to properly write a novelâ€ January 30 2011. He mentions copying drawings and the reader can see him experiment with different handwriting styles in the letters and on envelopes. The art in the collection includes greeting cards with teddy bear clownâ€”a common character in Chicano artâ€”and nature motifs; a Las Vegas Raiders butterfly signed â€œEâ€ most likely by P.â€™s cellmate Ernie for whom drawing is a â€œlittle hustle to make money for food and suppliesâ€ January 30; and a pair of beaded earrings that P. bought for $10 â€œto some Indian hereâ€ August 25 2010. 2010794952010. Small group of five books of yellow pages for the gay and lesbian community in Southern California. The Gay and Lesbian Community Yellow Pages were published between 1981 to 2016 by a series of owners. In 2000 the yellow pages came under the new ownership of publisher Irene Williams who wrote in an introduction to the telephone book â€œWe would like to take a moment to remind you of the power that the G.L.B.T. â€˜familyâ€™ has in the use of the mighty dollarâ€¦this community is a huge consumer market. Letâ€™s support each other.â€ The Community Yellow Pages was founded by Jeanne Cordova 1948-2016 in 1981. She was a trailblazer in the lesbian and gay rights movement and founder of The Lesbian Tide the first national lesbian newspaper which ceased publication in 1980. In 2005 the publication of the yellow pages was taken over by Frontiers publishers of Southern California's oldest and largest LGBTQ magazine. The size of the yellow pages began to shrink likely as more people turned to the Internet for information. After 2010-2011 the publication moved to an online only model before Frontiers ceased operations in 2016 after suffering for several years through new controversial ownership that attempted to expand the readership to heterosexual men and filing for bankruptcy in 2013. This group includes the 2001 2003 2005-2006 2006-2007 and 2010-2011 editions. These gay yellow pages play an important role in understanding the history of the LGBTQ community and provide a unique perspective on socio-economics issues. Several advertisers declared they were gay owned and operated while others provided services unique to the community such as medical personnel offering AIDS support services. Among the biggest advertises at the front of the books were always lawyers. In the early 2000s adds included language about avoiding jail for sex crimes and lewd conduct. This language was absent just a few years later. The books are overall in very good or better condition with some occasional light wear. unknown
