Despite the very cumbersome title this is a very rare pamphlet dealing with the sale and disposition of land in Southern California. The work contends that legitimate settlers were cheated out of their homes by frauds that were committed by a few men who “have sought to acquire vast tracts of land illegally and wickedly for speculative purposes.†This represents a significant part of the land problems which plagued the settlement of Los Angeles. unknown books

An early and rare promotional for Tulare County California located just south of Fresno. The county was then - and is still now - an important agricultural region recognition of which can be found in the title of this work. The agricultural potential of the county is stressed with descriptions of soil climate and irrigation methods. "First class land" is described as almost a "drug on the market" due to its plentifulness. The final page contains listings by land merchant Samuel Richardson who was selling lots from twenty to eight hundred acres in size. Not in Rocq. Initially named California Wesleyan College it petitioned the state to change its name to University of the Pacific one month after it was chartered. Pacific provided the West Coast with its first medical school in 1858 which later became part of Stanford and today is California Pacific Medical Center. Title page somewhat browned; light tanning and soiling elsewhere. First edition first issue with "Price 25 Cents" printed on the front board of this early 20th-century compendium of recipes "brought out by the 1905 series of prize recipe contests in the Los Angeles Times." The recipes all submitted by female readers of the newspaper form an initial section of nearly eighty Americanized Mexican "Spanish" dishes including "tamale pie" and "Spanish sweet potato pone" as well as many subsequent sections for soups salads cakes etc. and nine menus for picnic lunches. Oddly there are ninety recipes for marmalade but only twenty-four "ways of preparing vegetables." In nearly every instance the name and address of the contributor is listed alongside her recipe. Published by the city Chamber of Commerce this work touts the amenities and prosperities of Porterville including its agriculture citrus olives alfalfa livestock and fine climate. "That Porterville is a town of prosperity is indicated by the bank deposits among the largest per capita on the Pacific Coast. A very large percentage of the people of this city own their own residences. It is a city of homes since there are no saloons no restricted district no slums no Japanese or other Orientals no foreign population -- in a word a little city of 5000 wholesome people whom you will be pleased to know and who will extend you a welcome." Marlette's report includes primarily an account of the Northern Boundary Survey extending as far north as Pilot Knob. He also offers strong criticism on the quality of California mapping sums up the status of various rail lines through the state and encourages the development of a county road system. Text discusses the activities of the Development Board which was housed in the Ferry Building in San Francisco. This version seems to be the original version copyright in 1910. In 1914 the map was entirely revised and given a new title. There are old folds and a 6½ inch area of roughness along the lower left edge with a small marginal chip not affecting the image. The grand jury of Los Angeles County convicted Adams and others for operating a gambling ship in the waters of Santa Monica Bay at a point four miles beyond the end of the municipal pier of the city of Santa Monica and approximately six miles landward from a line drawn between the headlands Point Vicente on the south and Point Dume on the north. The case hinged on whether the ship's location was in international waters. Adams appealed his conviction and the order denying his motion for a new trial. In this brief Adams's lawyer argues that the ship was in international waters because the territorial limit is measured from the shoreline not the pier. unknown books

Never used this poster is still folded and sealed with the gallery's red stickers. This book perhaps the most successful Book Club of California publication in recent history sold out before publication. A scarce printed invitation to the Masquerade at San Francisco's Lick House held in 1870 and according to contemporary accounts one of the major events of the holiday season in the city. The hotel built on the corner of Sutter Street and Montgomery was one of the finest in the city before its destruction in the 1906 fire. A very good copy bright with a partial tear at the fold and some wrinkling to lower margin. A.L. Bancroft and Co books

Interesting promotional material for the La Blanc Oil Company for their developments in the Sunset Oil Field in Kern County California in 1909. A folding plat map of the field near Maricopa southwest of Bakersfield shows La Blanc's holdings highlighted in red and a brief text touts the geographical relation to other producing wells. Also included is a typed progress report on the depth of drilling accomplished and the anticipated time before reaching the deposits which assures investors that "No doubt is expressed by any one of our ultimate success." The photo postcards show supposedly representative images of gushing oil pipes overflowing oil barrels and a very pleased group of men overseeing the scene. A nice group with the original transmittal envelope addressed to an Edgar Bonnemort of Oakland. unknown books

John Charles Fremont led the fight for payment and was fundamental in the early history of California; his actions led to the founding of the Bear Flag Republic and Fremont himself would go on to serve as the first Senator from California in 1850.
