Wear and damage with large folds on right hand side missing upper and lower left corners including intersecting with caption text. Very good plus. A photograph of a young man standing in a grape field and holding a drying rack in Fresno 1901. Grape farming in Fresno began in the early 1870s and by the 1880s grapes including raisin grapes were the area’s main crop. 1921List3510California 1921. Photo album measuring 10 x 12 inches containing approximately 360 photographs. Photos are approximately 3 ½ x 4 ½ and smaller with very good to excellent contrast. Album with wear to covers and edges of pages; photos generally excellent to Near Fine. A photo album belonging to an unknown Southern California family; license plates date the album to about 1914 to 1921. Most of the photographs are of family life including farm work: piles of hay; cows pigs chickens turkeys and horse-drawn plows; gigantic watermelons; and family members posing outside vineyards and in cornfields. The family also documented their car and their recreational activities including swimming hiking and fishing picnics and carriage rides. It appears that they were quite proud of their car and were frequent “auto-campers.†They seem to have taken a trip to Mexico or the Southwest as some shots show wide desert landscapes Joshua trees and low Spanish colonial-era buildings.<br /> <br /> Identifiable subjects include the ferry boat Ramona; the Rose Parade in Pasadena showing Culver City Pasadena and Glendale floats; San Gorgonio Mountain Half Dome and the Wawona Tree a giant sequoia in Yosemite; and the Fairview Farm Club parade—a line of cars driving down a dirt road the first decorated with cornstalks—which is probably related to the ranching development located between Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.<br /> <br /> Someone in the family had an interest in hydroelectric power as many shots show ongoing or completed hydroelectric works projects in Southern California. Several show the Southern California Edison Big Creek plant. Located in the Sierra Nevada the Pacific Light & Power Corporation began the Big Creek project in 1910 to provide power to the growing metropolis of Los Angeles. The photographs in this album appear to include both exterior and interior shots. Another set of shots show a dam under construction; this may be Devil’s Gate Dam on the Arroyo Seco which was constructed in 1920.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of Southern California in the early twentieth century and some of its public works projects. unknown
1940Cat332United States 1940. Photo album measuring 7 x 10 inches containing fifty-three photographs: two tintypes c. 1890s and 1920s six RPPCs and forty-five modern photographs. Photographs mainly measure 4 x 6 inches and smaller. Conditions vary; some with wrinkling and damage especially to corners and edges; others Fine. Overall excellent. A photo album of an unknown couple. Early shots include two tintypes which appear to be turn of the century to 1920s and six real photo postcards dating to the 1920s at the latest based on stampboxes. The RPPCs include portraits shots from a farm and a souvenir photo from Brooklyn. Later shots are likely WWII-era showing several men posing in military uniforms.<br /> <br /> The album is highlighted by its photographs of Californian auto tourism and a Soap Box Derby event likely also in California. Identifiable tourist locations include Bear Canyon Campground in Altadena and Cedarpines Park in the San Bernardino mountains; people pose with the car in deep snow and at the campside and shots show the car with luggage strapped to the outside and filling up at a Shell. One Cedarpines photo is dated captioned “Winter ‘28â€. Later auto tourism shots—with what appears to be a 1940s model car—show the car at a Los Angeles mechanic with a teardrop camper and a boat on top and later parked at a beach with the camper set up with manuscript verso indicating that the location is Mexico. Alongside these photographs is a shot of a Depression-era billboard reading “NO JOBS in California / KEEP OUT / 6 MEN FOR EVERY JOB / NO STATE RELIEF AVAILABLE FOR NON-RESIDENTSâ€; on the verso it is captioned “1929 / This sign was posted in Tennesseeâ€.<br /> <br /> Soap Box Derby is a Depression-era invention beginning in 1934 in Dayton Ohio and quickly becoming a national phenomenon. Derby shots in this album appear to be Californian or at least to highlight Californian entrants: the cars pictured are sponsored by Siminow Bros. a Los Angeles gas station and mechanic. These include the cars being towed in the line for the inspection station the starting line and action shots.<br /> <br /> Highlighting two very different forms of car-based recreation the album is of interest to historians of the car in American leisure in the period surrounding the Great Depression. unknown

Photo album measuring 7 ¼ x 11 ¼ inches containing approximately eighty-five photographs generally 4 ½ x 2 ½ inches and smaller with three Rito Nacional Mexicano Freemason membership cards one 1943 tax return and one 1943 letter. Album cover broken and beginning to detach else excellent; contents excellent to Near Fine. A photo album belonging to the Sifuentes also recorded as Cifuentes family of Santa Ana California. Alfonso Sifuentes Rodarte 1896/9–1994 was born in Coahuila and his wife Enriqueta “Harriet†Gonzalez Galvan 1903–d. in Jalisco. The couple married in Orange California in 1923. The album situates the family at several Santa Ana addresses including W 4th Street and E 1st Street the latter appearing on a 1927 Masonic membership card from the University of Mexico; commercial signage also suggests an address on Bristol Street.<br /> <br /> The earlier photos from the 1920s and 30s show children and family playing and posing in front and back yards beach trips and two formal baby shots real photo postcards; two men pose in sombreros and stylish young ladies pose with a car in front of the house. What are likely photos with extended family look to have been taken on a farm. There are also wedding and church shots and later photos of men in uniform—Alfonso Sifuentes joined the Coast Guard during World War II. Photos are occasionally captioned in Spanish on the verso giving names and relations.<br /> <br /> The 1943 letter included in the album is from a fellow Coast Guardsman “Andrés†to his girlfriend Celia Sifuentes one of the family's daughters. Andrés mentions translated passing “the famous exams . without incident†and how much he enjoys spending time with Sifuentes’ family: “I wish my parents had the harmony that exists in your home.†According to the National Parks Service some 500000 Mexican Americans served in World War II while at the same time facing anti-Mexican and anti-Latine sentiment at home.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of Mexican American and Southern California regional history in the interwar era. unknown

Very good to excellent. A portrait of the Waseda University basketball team from 1927; according to its manuscript caption the photo was taken following their defeat by the University of California team at the Oakland Auditorium on a tour of the Pacific coast. 1938List2978San Quentin California 1938. Single 6 ½ x 8 ½ inch photograph caption affixed verso and marked verso “CALIF - STATE - PRISON SAN QUENTIN CALIFâ€. Folded at middle marginal wrinkling and small tears; fine contrast very good to excellent. A press photograph looking into the gas chamber at San Quentin Prison taken following the execution of Albert Kessel 1909–1938 and Robert Lee Cannon 1908–1938. The pair were the first to be executed at San Quentin using that method; they were two of five men executed for their role in an attempted escape from Folsom Prison that caused the death of warden Clarence Larkin and a guard. The photo’s caption reads in part:<br /> <br /> “Into these two black chairs Albert Kessel and Robert Lee Cannon were strapped today in the state’s first execution with use of lethal gas. A few seconds later the door was shut and made airtight; witnesses lined around the window and then the deadly cyanide eggs released.â€<br /> <br /> In 1994 the use of cyanide gas was ruled cruel and unusual and banned in California to be replaced by lethal injection; in 2006 a court order halted capital punishment in the state altogether though it is still legal. unknown

Colour-illustrated boards in blue gilt & black metallic gold pastedowns & flyleaves plastic comb-binding as issued light foxing & edgewear to a couple leaves minor edgewear to covers slight bumping to couple corners still a VG copy. First edition signed of this exceedingly scarce preview volume offering an artist’s & architect’s rendering excursion through the forthcoming Art Deco marvels of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition held on Treasure Island in San Francisco. Roberts & Roberts and Gabriel Moulin were the official photographers and the Chesley Bonestell birds-eye panorama featured in much of the promotional artwork for the fair grace the pages. Celebrating the completion of the iconic bridge as well as drawing from the $ 6250000.00 in funds from the WPA & PWA New Deal programs the 400 acre site was actually to have become the San Francisco Air Terminal but those plans were derailed by World War II. 1950218401950. Motorcycle club in a mountainous Western setting circa 1950s photo archive. Five original silver gelatin black-and-white prints. All photos measure approximately 4.5 x 3.25 inches with deckled edges. These striking images document a moment in American youth subculture centered around postwar motorcycle clubs. A standout image features a man in a short pompadour and sunglasses leaning on an Ariel motorcycle-specifically an Ariel Red Hunter a British single-cylinder model prized in the U.S. for its reliability and sleek style. Other motorcycles in the group include British makes such as BSA and Triumph widely imported during this era and embraced by early American motorcycle clubs prior to the Harley-Davidson boom of the late 1950s.<br /> <br /> The archive showcases a gathering of motorcyclists from their twenties into middle age and consisting of mostly men but with one woman present posing and riding through rugged terrain. Taken in a forested mountainous region in the American West the group includes about a dozen individuals clad in leather jackets work shirts engineer boots denim jeans and distinctive accessories like berets goggles and horn-rimmed glasses. In one photo a member in a plaid jacket with a holstered tool or knife turns toward a huddle of riders inspecting a downed bike. The group's fashion expresses the gritty masculine style of the early 1950s that eventually became morphed into the Greaser subculture. Light silvering and minor creases to margins; one image has a diagonal fold and minor corner wear. Overall very good condition. unknown

195571371San Francisco: Wyland Stanley c. 1955. Original silver gelatin print made by Wyland Stanley from the negative of ca. 1925. 16 3/4 x 13 1/4 and mounted to board with a typed caption. A fine & rich image. Wyland Stanley d. 1994 was a San Francisco collector of negatives and photographic printer. During the 1950s he made prints of historic photos by Isaiah Taber Carleton Watkins Bradley & Rulofson Edweard Muybridge as well these prints of vintage cars from original negatives of pictures taken in the 1920s. The Bancroft has a large collection 328 of Wyland Stanley historic prints. Many of Stanley's photographs are currently available from stock houses but this one was actually printed by Stanley the owner of the negative in the mid 1950s.
