A detailed 1935 map of Los Angeles provided as a promotional item by Bekins Van & Storage Co. which had moving offices and storage facilities across California during the Depression. The present map positions downtown Los Angeles at center right and its four corners extend to Inglewood West Hollywood Elysian Park and Huntington Park with Bekins buildings marked across the city. The verso prints a street index and a text advertising Bekins services illustrated with images of company vans employees and facilities. unknown books

A Fine copy. 31 1 pp. The narrative was written by the California author poet Isabel Hammel Raymond who contributed the text to another promotional booklet about Santa Cruz County. Her detailed description of the hotel consists of 15 pages of text. In addition there are four more unattributed pages of text about Santa Cruz and its virtues. 10 b/w captioned half-tone photographic images of primarily divers Santa Cruz scenes. Only one of the illustrations is of the Hotel St. George that an image of the main office. Map p. 32 showing routes from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. Oblong format: 4-3/16" x 6" <br/><br/>The Hotel St. George was built in the 1890s by the San Francisco millionaire A. P. Hotaling a very successful Pacific Coast liquor distributor. Stretching along one full block of downtown Santa Cruz it was regarded as the best accommodation along the coast between San Francisco and Monterey. As it changed hands over the years additions were added and renovations took place. As Santa Cruz’s coastal amusement tourist attractions were developed the hotel played a major role in keeping the city’s downtown area viable. The hotel existed well into the 20th C finally destroyed by fire in 1990. J. C. C. Leonard named as the lessee on the booklet's cover was involved with the hotel for many years before and after the turn of the 20th C. He is named in a 1905 lawsuit as being associated with the hotel as early as 1898. He was listed as the lessee as late as 1914. Established in 1906 by Claudio Ellena a descendant of an Italian winemaking family. Claudio's sons eventually took over the business marketing their wine under the brand Regina Queen of Wines. The vineyard primarily produced sparkling and dessert wines and also operated a vinegar plant. The present work showcases wine labels as well as a sparkling wine dispenser so you can pour bottles of champagne "on tap." The brochure gives a history of the family and vineyards and strives to "acquaint you more fully with the many ways to really enjoy the goodness of fine wines without the burden of responsibility of minute details or formality." It also includes recipes for several champagne cocktails. books

Pages opened roughly in a few instances causing closed tears in lower gutter but not costing any text. Good. In a cloth chemise and a narrow quarto-sized slipcase gilt leather label. An early promotional pamphlet for Monterey and surrounding region produced before the onslaught of highly-illustrated promotionals that characterized the turn of the century. The text gives a history of Monterey a guide for the visitor and descriptions of the resources of the surrounding area including Carmel Pacific Grove Cyrpess Point Hollister Salinas Castroville etc. - areas renowned either for their natural beauty and agricultural productivity. The brief sketches of the smaller communities also include information on local businesses and government officials. Both Cowan and Howes give a pagination of 128 pages. In our copy the text on page 127 ends with four- line erratum and page 128 contains ads. This is followed by advertisement pages numbered 1- 4 followed by another series of ads with pages numbered 129-152 indicating that there are at least two issues of this work.
