This is the smaller of two versions of this map; this one was most likely for pocket or portable use; the other larger version for display on a wall. OCLC records one copy of this version CHS and two of the larger version Bancroft and UC Davis. A few pencil notations probably by a realtor or planner; creased with some minor wear; a little browning at the edges; in very good condition. Cadastral real estate map 29.2 x 27.4 cm gray and green color outlining. A rare real estate map of the residential neighborhood of St. Francis Wood in its infancy across Portola Avenue from the West Portal neighborhood in San Francisco's Sunset District. San Francisco west of the Twin Peaks hills was mostly undeveloped by 1915 but a tunnel that would connect by train this remote part of the city with the neighborhoods closer to downtown was under construction and developers knew that once that was completed the areas west of Twin Peaks would be ripe for development. The San Francisco firm of Mason-McDuffie engaged the services of the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline Mass and famed California architect John Galen Howard to plan and design what would become one of San Francisco's most elegant residential neighborhoods. From the inception all utility lines were to be underground no apartment buildings were allowed and there were restrictions on the design and quality of construction. A rare ephemeral program for a concert held at the Rose Bowl on Sunday September 28 likely 1927 featuring African-American performers. The program identifies the origin of the concert: "Learning that the only Professional Community Musical Organization in Pasadena was making its final stage appearance owing to lack of funds we the Colored Citizens of Pasadena determined to give a benefit concert for the Pasadena Municipal Band as a matter of civic pride in our City." The performers include the band itself followed by the Etude Ethiopian Chorus and soloists Cora Leverda Morrow and Mattie Duckett. The Etude Ethiopian Chorus was managed by Freita Shaw. Both Shaw and Duckett who was also the business manager for the group are pictured on a page describing the Chorus. There are also committee listings for the Colored Citizens Presentation Committee passages regarding the importance of music to the African- American community and a program of the songs performed at the benefit concert including James Weldon Johnson's "Life Every Voice and Sing" described by the NAACP in 1919 as "the Negro national anthem". The program text is interspersed throughout with advertisements for local businesses including the Bickley Printing Company of Pasadena who most likely printed the program the printer always gets an ad in the local program. From the One Archive finding aid: The Southern California Council on Religion and the Homophile SCCRH traces its origins to a June 1 1965 meeting of 20 individuals in the Westchester YMCA called by the Council on Religion and the Homosexual of San Francisco which had been founded in 1964. The purposes of SCCRH were "to open the avenues of communication and understanding between churchmen and homophiles; to investigate and implement ways for meeting the spiritual needs and social responsibilities of homophiles; to encourage more satisfactory climate of opinion within the community on broad matters of sex and morals; and to seek just social treatment of the homophile community". The articles of incorporation submitted to the California Secretary of State in April 1966 were signed by the Rev. Alexander Smith director of the Downtown Service Bureau of the Los Angeles Missionary Society of the Methodist Church; W. Dorr Legg of ONE Institute; the Rev. Kenneth Wahrenbrock of the First Methodist Church in Glendale; the Rev. Marjorie Likins; and the gay activist and journalist Jim Kepner. The SCCRH provided an extensive program of monthly lectures discussion groups and informal meetings of clergymen church members and members of the GLBT community; retreats and conferences exploring homosexuality and religion; "exposure education" for non-gay clergymen and church members to learn about such aspects of GLBT culture as gay bars clubs and organizations; assistance to churches developing policies relating to homosexuality and religion and to homosexual law reform; and training for counselors teachers clergymen and others who counseled homosexuals. The organization originally utilized the mailing address of the Rev. Smith's Downtown Service Bureau; by 1970 it used the address of the Los Angeles Council of Churches on West Adams Blvd.; and by February 1971 the Venice Blvd. address of ONE Institute of which both Legg and Kepner were officers. Howell's is a measured overview his is a bookseller's concern with first-edition points and textual alteration: "There is a story behind each such textual change. That of the Stanford incident.was clearly a matter of flattery. The incident in respect to the remarks about David S. Terry was of another character. In that case the first printing tells the real story while political pressure - or possibly the threat of violence - is responsible for the later variant reading." Mr Howell continues: "There follows a list of all variant readings.which have thus far been called to my attention" a compressed list follows on second flimsy. The other negative view of Bancroft is an attack the Society's: "Resolved That the name of Hubert Howe Bancroft be stricken from the list of Honorary Members"; sustaining points mostly concern California but Bancroft's alleged "apparently malignant and certainly cruel and unjust attack upon the name and memory of General Grant" is indignantly noted.
