18478890Boston 1847. Broadsheet menu 31 x 13.6 cm. 2 pages. Illustrated with an engraving of the hotel from across Boston's Bowdoin Square. A menu and wine list for the hotel restaurant of Revere House issued in the hotel's inaugural year. Built on the site of home of Boston's Kirk Boote Revere House became one of the city's leading hotels hosting guests that included Charles Dickens Jenny Lind and Walt Whitman and Daniel Webster addressed audience from the steps of the portico. Paran Stevens 1802-1872 at times the general manager and later a co-owner of the hotel was to become proprietor of additional luxury hotels in Claremont N.H. Philadelphia and New York. He had a considerable reputation as connoisseur of wines and liquors and was said to have the finest nose in the country. The "Stevens Sherry" was tailor-made to suit his palette and it was said that his cellars were "never equaled in America". The Wine List includes the usual categories: Madeira Sherry Champagne Hock Sauterne Port Burgundy and Claret along with a short selection of Porter and Ale. What is unusual is the detail in the descriptions of some of the Madeira and Sherry including Dornelios Vasconcellos Sercial Rapid East India Madeira imported by J. W. Boott Esq. in 1819 – bottled in 1822 and Governor Phillip's imported in 1820 from Page Phelps & Co. ~ Paper is age-toned and has a water stain along the bottom edge. Still bright and legible. Very good. No records of other copies of this menu have been located. Menus from any location in the United States prior to 1850 are very scarce. Rare. unknown

Smith / With the regards of / E.E.H. / Feb. 9 1881." <br /> <br /> Posthumous collection of Tuckerman's essays on the relief of poverty in Boston most originally issued as reports of the Minister at Large a post which Tuckerman himself established. Tuckerman 1778-1840 was a pioneer in the field of social reform and his advocacy for Boston's poor in the early 19th century was noteworthy for its emphasis upon education and direct action rather than simple charity. The work begun by Tuckerman nearly 200 years ago persists in the very active Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry which still espouses Tuckerman's principles in overseeing a wide range of public welfare programs in the Boston area. Title page printed in red and black. FIRST EDITION. A handsome promotional book about the vanilla plant and vanilla extract sold by the Joseph Burnett Company commemorating the 50th anniversary of the firm and promoting Burnett's Vanilla Extract. The book contains three sections: "The Plant: Its Habitat and History" "Its Culture" and "Its Curing" with information on the vanilla plant or the vanilla orchid; its countries or regions of origin; and the cultivation and curing processes of vanilla. Text at the end warns customers of unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople peddling fraudulent or low-quality vanilla extracts advocates for grocers to carry only high-quality vanilla extract and advertises Burnett's Vanilla Extract and Burnett's edible Standard Color Pastes. Internally fresh clean and sound. Original publisher's beige and green paper-covered boards titled and decorated in green and black on the front panel; no title to spine. Fine and rare thus. Instructions for ordering followed by illustrations of and pricing for various products to include crests letters rosettes hames terrets buckles chains links hooks etc. Born in New Brunswick Joseph Colgan came to Boston as a young boy where he learned and perfected his trade under Henry Cross father of Mark Cross the owner of America's first luxury leather goods company. Colgan established himself in business at Sudbury Street in 1850 remaining at that address throughout his career. He became involved in the manufacture of military and foremen's equipment fancy saddlery and leather specialties. Page edges lightly soiled throughout due to handling; title page with 1/4" x 1" chip missing to bottom edge and with creasing to bottom corner along with text separating from wrappers but still holding. 188510250Boston: Kiley Printer 7 Spring Lane 1885. Bi-fold menu 13.5 x 12 cm. 4 pages. Illustrated. Engraved menu for a banquet given for Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks former Senator from and Governor of Indiana. Hendricks was the 21st Vice President lasting a mere 8 months in office from March 4th through November 25th 1885. This dinner was given by the Bay State Club at the famous Parker House. In the few short months he had left Hendricks was to give a controversial speech in support of Irish independence and head of the Boston machine politician Martin Lomasney was to name the Hendricks Club after him. The light tan card stock boards sport a gilt-edged circular medallion with an engraving of the Vice President. The card is lightly dusty and with the slightest of abrasions at the corners. The binding is strong with all pages firmly attached. A couple of pages show light pencil writing and notes. The pages show light soiling and light foxing. The title page shows 1851 as the published date. The dark green cloth covers have a gold illustration of a fork on the spine. The covers show general edgewear and light soiling. A job printing announcement with the city lecture location therein day of week and date all in manuscript at top. Price of the lecture 25 cts in mss in the 7th line from the bottom. In the lower margin has been inked "Tickets sold at the Book Store of Mr Bolles Steam Boat Hotel & at the doors". 18" x 12" <br/><br/>"Petra is a historical and archaeological city in southern Jordan. Petra declined rapidly under Roman rule in large part from the revision of sea-based trade routes. In 363 an earthquake destroyed many buildings and crippled the vital water management system. In the 12th century the Crusaders built fortresses but left after a while. As a result Petra was forgotten for the Western world until the 19th century. The first European to describe them the ruins was Swiss traveller Johann Ludwig Burckhardt during his travels in 1812. The Scottish painter David Roberts visited Petra in 1839 and returned to England with sketches ." Wiki In this advertisement "Mr Swift" announces "a course of 2 lectures in the New London Court House in this place commencing Wednesday evening April 14th upon PETRA or The Excavated City". He exclaims that the lecture will be accompanied by "Seventeen large and beautifully executed paintings representing the present condition of these wonderful and justly celebrated cities." The broadside then goes on to describe in detail the subject of each of the 17 paintings. He concludes by asserting "The views exhibited are real Paintings --- not Magic Lantern illusions." No doubt this Mr Smith was riding the coattails of Roberts' sketches. one wonders where today might be found those paintings. And if no longer extant here we document their onetime existence. As an aside it should be noted that Eli Smith had a bit of a brouhaha with one J. S. Buckingham who also published some text on Petra of which Smith felt there were inaccuracies and so published same. The contretemps resulting in Buckingham publishing an 1840 pamphlet documenting the correspondence between the two: PUBLIC ADDRESS DELIVERED BY MR.
