182636379Boston: n/a 1826. Ledger. Fair. Folio. 94 leaves 188 pages. Brown suede leather binding with Cambridge style designs on the covers. Marbled end papers. Chipped leather label on the spine. Lean to the binding in part due to removed pages. Hinges cracked and cords visible in the front hinge. No loose pages. Interior contents mostly clean. The first 21 pages used for pasted down serial clippings of the story titled "Only A Shop-Girl; or A Pearl in Pledge. A Story Founded on Actual Events that Occurred in Boston by Nathan D. Urner" no date. This serialized version ends on Chapter 25 with no more clippings to finish the story. Several of the ledger leaves are neatly removed in the gutters. Dozens of accounts records remain from November 1826 to July 15 1830. A few clippings and paper left inside. Exact location and owner of the ledger unknown. Location is in Massachusetts and Boston areas with several places identified. A sampling of account names include Livery Stable; Wm White printers; Tim M. Baker; Geo. A handsome promotional book about the vanilla plant and vanilla extract sold by the Joseph Burnett Company commemorating the 50th anniversary of the firm and promoting Burnett's Vanilla Extract. The book contains three sections: "The Plant: Its Habitat and History" "Its Culture" and "Its Curing" with information on the vanilla plant or the vanilla orchid; its countries or regions of origin; and the cultivation and curing processes of vanilla. Text at the end warns customers of unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople peddling fraudulent or low-quality vanilla extracts advocates for grocers to carry only high-quality vanilla extract and advertises Burnett's Vanilla Extract and Burnett's edible Standard Color Pastes. An Appeal to the Good Sense of the Legislature and the Community in Favor of a New Bridge to South Boston

Pink staining to front wrapper edgewear otherwise very good. Scarce pamphlet criticizing monopolies in general and more specifically the factions who opposed a new toll-free bridge in Boston because it would be detrimental to the interests of those holding a charter and collecting tolls for the existing Charles River bridge. Moser's Daniel Webster bibliography attributes this eloquently written pamphlet to Massachusetts State Senator David Henshaw 1791-1852. We have not been able to confirm this but it seems reasonable given that he was one of the leaders of the Democratic Party in Boston belonged to a group of real estate investors who would benefit from population growth spurred by the proposed new bridge and "represented the growing group of Bostonians who were shut out from the traditionally privileged class" Haines and Sherwood Supreme Court in American Government and Politics p. 32. Daniel Webster was one of the attorney representing the interests of the Charles River Bridge Company which was incorporated in 1785. Ultimately in a landmark decision in favor of free enterprise Charles River Bridge v. Warren Bridge 1837 the Unites States Supreme Court ruled that the charter of the Charles River Bridge Company did not exclude the state of Massachusetts from chartering another bridge nearby. An expression of Boston's revolt against domination by the Federalist Central Committee which opposed electoral reforms and thwarted efforts to end imprisonment for debt. The Middling Interest which also opposed the entrenched and self-serving Republicans sought election by ward of State and Federal representatives. The Middling Interest sought on behalf of the emerging middle class the power and recognition which both of Boston's political parties had denied them. "We hold that rich men acquire no political influence justly by their wealth alone."
