The first 21 pages used for pasted down serial clippings of the story titled "Only A Shop-Girl; or A Pearl in Pledge. A Story Founded on Actual Events that Occurred in Boston by Nathan D. Urner" no date. This serialized version ends on Chapter 25 with no more clippings to finish the story. Several of the ledger leaves are neatly removed in the gutters. <br /> <br /> Dozens of accounts records remain from November 1826 to July 15 1830. A few clippings and paper left inside. Exact location and owner of the ledger unknown. Location is in Massachusetts and Boston areas with several places identified. A handsome promotional book about the vanilla plant and vanilla extract sold by the Joseph Burnett Company commemorating the 50th anniversary of the firm and promoting Burnett's Vanilla Extract. The book contains three sections: "The Plant: Its Habitat and History" "Its Culture" and "Its Curing" with information on the vanilla plant or the vanilla orchid; its countries or regions of origin; and the cultivation and curing processes of vanilla. Text at the end warns customers of unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople peddling fraudulent or low-quality vanilla extracts advocates for grocers to carry only high-quality vanilla extract and advertises Burnett's Vanilla Extract and Burnett's edible Standard Color Pastes. Internally fresh clean and sound. Original publisher's beige and green paper-covered boards titled and decorated in green and black on the front panel; no title to spine. Fine and rare thus. H. Eager treas. for the Crosby company. Approx. 5 1/2" x 9" size; with 2 checks payments affixed at side edges made to the McAnerney & Co. and to Crosby co. with a printed sheet dated in ms. 1879. This is a notice regarding the insolvency of John McAnerney and Henry St. George Offutt the firm of John McAnerney & Co. and its assignment to Bentley D. Hassell for the benefit of the creditors of which the Crosby business was one. Witnessed by P. Clark & the Crosby Co. treasurer with their company's blindstamp seal.
