1940204597Ann Arbor: Civil Rights Federation 1940. First edition. Neatly folded twice horizontally; fine. Two-sided broadsheet approx. 8-1/2 X 11 inches printed on both sides. Announcement of the "Open Hearing" held on behalf of thirteen expelled students with a graphic image of a judge on the recto and a length text along with lists of participants and sponsors on the rear. Following a peace rally in April 1940 University President Alexander G. Ruthven fearing fifth-column Communist organizing on campus expelled the students mostly members of the left-wing American Student Union. The case drew national attention at a time when the country was deeply divided over the war in Europe. At this culminating event in November a range of speakers including representatives of the Civil Rights Federation labor unions professors and activists denounced Ruthven and defended the students' first amendment rights. In the end however the students remained expelled and a year later the U.S. was in the war. Civil Rights Federation unknown

Silvertone photograph of Dwight Chellis Navy Chief in the Locomotive-Mounted U.S. Naval Railroad Batteries who fought with the American Expeditionary force in France during W.W.I.<br /> <br /> Photo most likely taken in France showing Chellis a former student of the University of Michigan before the war in what might be a U.S. Marine uniform. Photo has writing in the margins: "Dwight F. Chellis/served in all the big battles/ decorated for superior marksmanship in the U.S. Marines/only naval battery on armament or swivel cars." <br /> <br /> It is accompanied by a three page handwritten note in pencil possibly written later by another family member who identified Chellis as a sailor Dwight F. Chellis/February 1919/Chief Engineers mate/U.S. Naval Battery"<br /> <br /> The note is mistaken with regard to his rating and Marine Corps service. According to The Michigan Alumnus April 1919 Chellis had been a member of the Michigan Naval Militia which was organized at UMichigan in January 1917. He with 37 other students enlisted or were commissioned in the U.S. Naval Batteries USNB and served in France by July 9 1918. The magazine notes that he was a "CCM" Chief Carpenter's Mate rather than a "Chief Engineers mate" per the note.<br /> <br /> The note is also incorrect regarding Chellis's having served with the Marine Corps. As documented in Navy Department Publication Number 6: The United States Navy Railroad Batteries in France 1922 and the Naval History and Heritage Command's Historical Summary of the U.S. Naval Railway Batteries 2018 the USNB was strictly a U.S. Navy unit and never affiliated with the U.S. Marines. Rather it was assigned to the U.S. Army specifically the First Army's Railway Artillery Reserve RAR. The photograph appears to show Chellis wearing an indistinct shoulder sleeve patch. Army soldiers assigned to the RAR wore shoulder patches featuring the Coastal Artilleries fictional mascot the Oozlefinch Woozlefinch and some sources suggest that the USNB wore a variation of this patch.<br /> <br /> Following the war Chellis returned to New England and became a successful real estate agent in Rutland VT. <br /> <br /> Photo 3.25" x 4" attached to partial album page with 3 8.5 x 5.5" pages written in pencil. First edition. 4to. 12" x 9" color pictorial wrappers 24 pp. including covers color-lithograph illustrated throughout and numerous black & white photograph illustrations. This scarce dealership catalogue is the Hudson Motor Car Company's 30th anniversary lineup with fresh new styling and models. A limited numbers of these models have survived and very few appear in period photographs. Even though over 80000 cars were shipped to dealers there are very few remaining examples from one of the few surviving pre-World War II smaller automakers. For the year 1939 the company offered six new models all equipped with L-head engines with chrome-iron blocks beginning with a bare-bones Series 90 and then the Series 91 92 and 93 straight sixes and finally the fully equipped Series 95 and 97. The Country Club sedans Broughams and Coupes featured luxurious Airfoam interiors with a broad range of paint and upholstery choices. This is a very colorful and informative catalogue. Some signed some with other notes laid in. <br /> <br /> Archive of materials from Westport House also sometimes credited as "La Presse Sous-Sol" The Basement Press of Wallace and Joyce Bonk in Ann Arbor Michigan.<br /> <br /> "Wally" was a professor at the University of Michigan for 25 years served as the chairman of the department of library sciences and was considered an expert in building library collections. Joyce was a librarian and served as the assistant curator of books at the UM Clements Library for over 35 years.<br /> <br /> <br /> The card dated October 25 has a handwritten note laid in that says "This is the first product of my newly-acquired press.I hope I will be able to improve the product." This card and one other Christmas card are unnumbered and presumed to be cards 1 and 2. The rest of the cards are given a general number and also grouped into categories such as Historical Series Literary Series and Christmas Series. This archive contains General Numbers 12 3 5-10 13. <br /> <br /> It also contains a copy of To Hades We Will Go Westport Book II by Jane Howlon Black - actually an anagram for the publisher Wallace John Bonk. Laid in is an announcement of the cancellation of the Westport card series in spring of 1962 to publish this book with an attached specimen page as well as an address correction card. . This brochure was apparently produced as a promotional item describing the benefits of establishing orchards in west Michigan. Contains one map. This is a nice clean tight and unmarked booklet with no interior or exterior markings no previous owner names and no bookplates. The covers are in nice condtion with no creases tears or chips. The original intent was to print a certain amount of copies to be bound and distributed to seminaries and schools of religion. In late 1980 the binding and distribution began. 1928179191928. University of Michigan Medical School Class Portrait includes four women and one Indian doctor in 1928. A large photo Measures 22" x 17.5" inches. The large image is made of smaller portraits of students and faculty each measuring 1.5" x 1" inches with students names below each one. Of the over 150 medical students 4 are women 3 of them white and one Indian. The medical faculty is entirely male. Aside from the Indian female student the entire class is white. The group all together highlight the slow diversification of the medical field to incorporate women and minorities. The photo has a small tear to one margin but not affect class images or text. An unusually rare buggy and wagon manufacturer's catalog which focused on direct sales rather than a network of dealers. The catalog illustrates their entire line-up of buggies surries carriages phaeton Stanhopes runabouts road wagons spring wagons express wagons delivery wagons milk bakery and mail wagons with harnesses of all kinds with illustrations information on and pricing for each. Harry and Frank Jacobs had initially partnered with H.L. Patterson in the Union Buggy Co. as early as 1901 selling the "Union" line of vehicles manufactured by other Pontiac Michigan wagon and buggy manufacturers and marketing them in their line of catalogs. After the Union Buggy Co. folded the company was reconstituted for a couple years as the Union Buggy & Harness Co. Within a couple years the company must have folded because by 1910 Harry was working for auto manufacturers in Pontiac as a purchasing agent and Frank was working as an executive with the local knitting mills. The interior three panels present the agendas for May 21 22 and 23 1951. The exterior three panels announce the Target - Detroit events and present information and points of contact for the City of Detroit Office of Civil Defense The Michigan Civil Defense Council and the Civil Defense Metropolitan Area Coordination Executive Committee. Cover is worn torn and soiled. Unique surviving very detailed materials from a 1951 Civil Defense exercise involving the city of Detroit. Approximately 2.5 inches with multiple paginated sections. Cover says Theoretical Solution of April 16th Mock A-Bomb Attack on City of Detroit on front and back covers. Front cover also says File Copy and has a 'received stamp dated June 19 1951 by the City of Detroit. Among the speakers on the first morning were: Mayor Cobo of Detroit Governor G. Mennen Williams and Col. S. L. A. Marshall military historian and analyst. The three days went from about 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. with recesses for meals. There were individual speakers and panel discussions. Lester James Maitland February 8 1899 - March 27 1990 was an aviation pioneer and career officer in the United States Army Air Forces and its predecessors. Maitland began his career as a Reserve pilot in the U.S. Army Air Service during World War I and rose to brigadier general in the Michigan Air National Guard following World War II. In 1927 Maitland and Lt. Albert F. Hegenberger completed the first transpacific flight from California to Hawaii flying the modified transport Bird of Paradise. Although the recognition accorded them was less in comparison with the adulation given Charles Lindbergh for his transatlantic flight only five weeks earlier Maitland and Hegenberger's feat was arguably more significant from a navigational standpoint. Maitland continued his career in the Air Corps serving in combat as a bombardment group commander during World War II. He later became the first director of the Wisconsin Aeronautics Commission and the Director of Civil Defense for the state of Michigan. Michigan Office of Civil Defense unknown
