He was a self-taught scholar who learned to read eight or nine languages. He was a school teacher for over 20 years, and is best known for his histories and translations. This work was read closely and often carried by settlers moving West - which in those days meant travel beyond the Appalachians. He wrote this while living at "Refuge, Near Mechanicsburg, PA.
